Refugee (A Dictionary Definition)
Refugee, a dictionary definition, that we may understand more,
"Someone forced to leave their country to escape, persecution, natural disaster or war,"
But that's, "Them," right? I mean, it could never happen to us,
Our system, civiisation, politicians, they would never, "Throw us under the bus?"
Surely we're just too organised for that to ever come to pass?
But as John Buchan said, "The barrier between civilisation and barbarism is a sheet of glass,"
Let's quantify. Exactly how much disaster, war or persecution,
Would it take to make us think that migrating was the solution?
What exactly would it take before the rest of the world were forced to watch us flee?
And mutter in hushed voices, "There but for the grace of god go we."

I think that there's the important difference. A refugee and a migrant are very different things. But let's not for one second fool ourselves about how close we potentially all are to becoming either. Wasn't it John Buchan that said, " You think that a wall as solid as the earth separates civilisation and barbarism. I tell you the division is a thread, a sheet of glass. A touch here, a push there, and you bring back the reign of Satan." How far are we from that push, that touch?
