21st c. enlightenment blues
Rattling through the low hills
in the darkness and the endless endless rain
the train is overcrowded

and the conductor’s now a manager
a voice we never see
mumbling something through the tannoy
about weather and delays.
We used to have seats
now we stand
and this is progress.
Outside

As I pish pash down the monstrous streets of Paris
The rain makes the cheap neon shimmer and shiver
I am approached by a creaking vagrant
Shuddering and Grunting
Coughing and Wheezing
He pushes a shopping trolley containing maize
I secretly wish he will pass me by
But of course he does not

Thy pen; no mighty sword here preach
Where words, metallic, fall.
On blood-ink lines; stained city streets -
Oh time, thou horrors crawl.
Wrought freedom flits, it waxes, ebbs,
Whence censored bullets rain,
But fallow not among the dead
Doth liberty remain.
