picturing poets
There was a bit of discussion on another thread about poets' profile photos/images. Someone said they didn't much care for the question mark and I agree. I think the image that we chose can reflect how we are feeling at a particular time, and I think they enrich and add interest to the site. Shy and retiring poets don't have to show us their faces, I'd rather see a photo of practically anything rather than the question mark. But obviously, it's a free country so if you are appearing as a question mark, I hope that I haven't offended you! But it's a resource that I think we should all have some fun with.

I hate question marks too! I wonder if some poets aren't that technically up with it. I mean - they would have to upload a digital picture of themselves. Failing that they would have to google and save something...
I do think it is fun reflecting your personality through a google image or photo. You can tell a lot about a person from what they choose.

Well, my picture should be alot more entertaining than it is. It's actually an animated Gif file of our dog, Dilly, when she was a puppy, and the real life version is licking the screen. Unfortunately WOL doesn't have the facility to cope with animated Gifs.
I suspect that Izzy is right, alot of folks probably don't know how to upload a photo. Certainly, when I started mooching round the internet I didn't have a clue and I still find parts of WOL a bit of a puzzle.
:-)

I still don't own a digital camera. I borrow one from my kids if I have to. I need to buy one though. I have taken my last 35mm film for developing. It is just too expensive now - they have to send them away...
Chris - it's nice that you've made the effort to upload something - and it does look like you, even if it's not your house! x

PS if we were able to have animated gifs on WOL, Lord knows what kind of images might get uploaded...
It would make it entertaining logging on though :)

John, I always think, when I see "your" photo, that you are sticking your tongue out at us in a mischievous fashion! Sometimes this seems very appropriate! ;-)

On a sort of "downer" after the last comment, but sort of following on, when Dilly goes to dog heaven, will you mind having her image on here? Or will it make you sad? Without giving too much away, almost all my passwords for things are variations on the name of my now departed cat. Seems a bit sad now.

I've changed my profile picture a few times - mostly after unfavourable comments on previous images. I'm not sure I would be comfortable with a pic of the "real" me, and besides, I can't find one of me that's either recent or decent (and by that I don't mean "in the buff!") I did submit a pic of me to accompany a POTM, but for some reason, it was never used; perhaps the compiler of that particular article wished to spare readers the horror of the experience. I do like humour in the avatars people choose, and I agree, it does seem to suggest something about their various personalities.

I am one of those not technically up with it. I learnt, in a very laborious fashion, how to upload a photo onto an email for the Poem of the Month slot. How to put it straight onto WOL is beyond me.To learn would involve asking one of my daughters and a man can only tolerate so much condescension in one lifetime. Likewise, I don't possess a mobile phone, can't even work out how to use my wife's mobile phone.

Lovely to hear from you Anthony.
I like the brightness of the fool, but must admit to also missing the arse - or should I call it a sphincter? It reminds me of my early days on WOL. x
Swallow your male pride Ray and ask one of the daughters. It would only take someone a few minutes to show you and then you can change them whenever you like.

Maybe on April Fool's Day we should all put the silliest possible pictures on our profiles. Maybe even our arses!

Ah! Down here in the west country we have Cornish Pixels Isobel! Honest! ;-)

We used to have those icon things where you choose a face to match your mood, but they were unpopular - patronising, apparently.
Personally I think your photos make the site look quite distinguished and elegant, if I may make so bold, Ann, Isobel and Chris.

Well thank you muchly Julian! Would that be because we are we are showing life like images or because we are all women?
I quite like Darren Thomas's bare back side and Anthony's former arse - so I'm not far behind you on that one...

It took me ages to get to grips with how to upload a photo mostly because i don't have much idea about pixels or mega-pixels, image sizes etc...
which meant that some simply would not go in.
I like to see an image as opposed to a question mark so maybe another option for those who prefer not to have their own face on profile for all the world to see and/or have difficulty uploading one could have other choices.
Got to say i detest those 'mood face' gif images most sites have to choose from though.
Julian - I remember the ones we used to have in discussions and they were ok.. quite funny in fact and at least people were aware of how the comments in discussions were meant to be taken :-)
Anthony's arse photo was funny in my opinion but as i remember he told me once that even that wasn't his own :-)
It always reminded me of someone who suffers with piles and been told they would find some comfort sitting on a blown up ring :-)

Yes - I was always aware it wasn't Anthony's real bum. That didn't bother me though. I thought it was most considerate of him to choose such a pert, muscular one. I also liked the cheeky humour of the tie poking though. Come on Anthony - give it a revival!
