Where I'm From
I am from family fighting I am from “don’t get daddy angry” I am from violence I am from a sick mother I am from a sick father I am from a sick home I am from a brother who hit me I am from a brother who protected me I am from brothers who thought I was weak I am from blame and shame and guilt I am from love When my mother could give it I am from privilege If my father didn’t take it away I am from pretending people weren’t there I am from pretending those people couldn’t hurt me I am from pretending stuffed animals could keep me safe I am from pain I am from loneliness But I also am from love I am also from parents Parents who are people People who are struggling People who don’t have all the answers People with a demanding daughter who always wanted them to have a reason for the why the world hurt and wouldn’t take no for an answer I am from my family And all that comes with them I carry them around with me My invisible backpack Of pain and support, fear and love
