It’s not ours, our ‘own’ backyard;
We pitch a tent and borrow
This patch for our duration.
By diversion, we consume
At an ever faster rate,
But for the same reasons – sex,
Greed, guilt, jealousy, revenge –
As ten thousand years ago.
Are we happier today?
Contented and more fulfilled?
Brainier and better skilled?
We think so, but do not know.
Agree about leaving technology which was unthinkable not so many years ago, but we have paid a high price for this. If we manage to reduce carbon emissions effectively, hopefully we will leave them our technological advances without the consequences.

Thanks for all the views, John and M.C. This generation will, I think, leave a legacy of incredible technological progress but also one of excessive consumption which has led to a global heating crisis. It can redeem itself by taking steps to sort this out and not dump its consequences on the grandchildren.
John, the dinosaurs certainly mastered longevity but did they do jealousy or revenge? Or Instagram? Does it matter?
It has been said that we stand on the shoulders of giants.
What size shoulders will we provide for future generations
in this fear-fueled age? Are we the era of caution before
courage and conviction? ?
We take a very superior view of those stupid dinosaurs without realizing that they were around for 165,000,000 years whilst we have just been here for 200,000.
Thanks for the interesting comment, Keith. I have often wondered what a generation being 'more advanced' means. Perhaps we are just more devious and have more options.
