SELL BY DATE
It seemed like a good idea at the time
the patented gizmo that stands by the wall
with a purpose apparent to no one at all.
So complicated and so much to learn
its box still in store in case of return.
Medicines stacked on shelves too tall,
relieving digestion and energy slumps
blissfully unaware of your fate
as they head towards their sell by date.
Clothes that looked good in a high street shop
in dusty corners dejected they flop.
Remotes that replaced those other remotes
orphaned with batteries green and neglected
no one used, (there was a hitch)
adding to the long rejected.
Decisions made a few years back
that floated away like a foldaway mac
handy if it rains then left indoors,
a pack ot tiles for a much stained floor
that cat flap that didn't quite fit the door.
They all seemed a brilliant idea at the time
but none of them made your life sublime,
salami you bought in Market Deeping
is quietly frightfully oddly weeping.

Thanks Mark. Yes indeed the food aspect is a highly contentious one, offering the alternative of buy by and sell by. The best option is to say by bye and in the bin, but at what cost?!
I recall that Clement Freud had on his gravestone: best before (and then the date) !
Thanks John, Stephen and Holden for the additional likes. Aythangyow.
