STAND AND DELIVER

You seldom see them from year to year

but their stars shine bright on a midnight clear,

after the autumn leaves have dropped

on this winter solstice when flames are flaring

it's the time again for caring.

So just as last year and the year before

you find a name, an address in a book,

write a card of fantasy,

then like a paper dart you cast if off to find

the statutory statue of the letterbox

that stands red hands in pockets with the cold

that stands and delivers the card

that lands upon a mat somewhere

with perennial thoughts of Christmas cheer.

Such is the ritual state of mind that

you hope your gesture will be returned

your memory not be left behind.

Thanks all for your kind comments. Yes Keith, there is a social drive to fulfil ourselves in this way, certainly!

Bonkers Leon, surely, but such is the power of influence....

Isn't it strange Stephen, the mechanics of it all, and we go against our sense of fair play if we desist.

Your attitude is of course the right one Graham, getting to the heart of it. We do feel the need to keep in touch. It just makes me feel that a year is ticking by too quickly!

The horns of a dilemma Mark. I don't really like the e cards, bit too cheesy, but that's the world we inhabit. I like a bit of copper plate and licking a stamp myself.

Tom, Stephen, Holden and Moonlight, thank you so much for the likes.

Happy Xmas everyone!!

I keep saying I will resort to email cards instead (I subscribe to a well known online site), but I still find myself posting the
paper cards - hardly a contribution to saving the environment, even if I might be saving the Royal Mail! 😏

I still think a card means you've taken the time to think of the people who you send to. Once a year is better than none.
I'm always cynical about those who say 'we're not doing cards this year, we're giving the money to charity' and ma left wondering if they actually do?

Love the image of the postbox with his hands in his pockets Ray.
A very Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Thank you, Ray. Christmas cards take on a life of their own. Some unseen force commands us to send them. I still receive cards from a couple whom I simply can't remember.

My wife sends cards to various people we met once on holiday and have never seen or spoken to since.

Ray,
a poem to trigger an interesting theme of thought about who we really are in relation to what we do.
Thank you for this
Keith
