STAND AND DELIVER
You seldom see them from year to year
but their stars shine bright on a midnight clear,
after the autumn leaves have dropped
on this winter solstice when flames are flaring
it's the time again for caring.
So just as last year and the year before
you find a name, an address in a book,
write a card of fantasy,
then like a paper dart you cast if off to find
the statutory statue of the letterbox
that stands red hands in pockets with the cold
that stands and delivers the card
that lands upon a mat somewhere
with perennial thoughts of Christmas cheer.
Such is the ritual state of mind that
you hope your gesture will be returned
your memory not be left behind.

Thanks all for your kind comments. Yes Keith, there is a social drive to fulfil ourselves in this way, certainly!
Bonkers Leon, surely, but such is the power of influence....
Isn't it strange Stephen, the mechanics of it all, and we go against our sense of fair play if we desist.
Your attitude is of course the right one Graham, getting to the heart of it. We do feel the need to keep in touch. It just makes me feel that a year is ticking by too quickly!
The horns of a dilemma Mark. I don't really like the e cards, bit too cheesy, but that's the world we inhabit. I like a bit of copper plate and licking a stamp myself.
Tom, Stephen, Holden and Moonlight, thank you so much for the likes.
Happy Xmas everyone!!
