PUTIN'S WOMEN

When a man goes off the rails

Like some nutter with a knife

It makes me contemplate what fails

With the women in his life?

Every man born has a mother

And many have a wife

So where is their restraining touch

When he submits himself to strife?

'It's said behind successsful men

A woman may be found

But what about the dangerous sort -....

The violent and unsound?

Where are their women at such times

When needed most of all -...

To hold back men from terrible crimes

And the horrors that befall?

...................................................................

MC - there is no question who is the boss in our house; it’s me.
And I have Our Gert’s permission to say so!

Steve and JC - thank you for taking the trouble to comment.
I think men have a tendency to invest women with the qualities
they may feel they lack themselves and need as a counterbalance in life. Powerful men perhaps more so!

I think it rather demeans women to argue they have no influence over their men. Surely they are more worthy than being considered gagged subordinates.

This is a poem that seems to have got everyone thinking but I have to agree with the central thrust, why hasn't someone, mother, wife, colleague, anyone really, spoken to Mr Putin and said, 'What the heck are you doing Vlad? People are dying by the thousands. Stop this madness!'
Of course, no one questions a dictator . .

I'm grateful for the level-headed responses seen here.
There are historical references; a couple mentioned previously,
plus of course, a certain Imelda Marcos and Marie "Let them
eat cake" Antoinette. It has been held as a truth that women
provide a restraining civilising influence on men and this was in
mind when I began considering the theme of my poem. in the
context of this Russian president's behaviour.

Good to see a lively debate as most work on this site doesn't raise the hackles.

I note that the 'cancel culture' raised its head. You can't ban something just because you don't like it.

Sadly as with many pieces of work that are contentious, the 'argument' eventually revolves around the commentary and not the work itself.
For most Mr and Mrs Average (me being firmly in that category for the last 51 years)both the male and the female of the species do tend to discuss virtually everything before decisions are made.

Even more sadly, despots, tyrants, megalomaniacs, dictators do not seem to share a similar relationship, ergo discussing any potential 'influence' that their partners might have (and I include both sexes in this as there have ben many prominent female leaders)is somewhat futile and at best hypothetical.

Let's hope whoever eventually manages to 'influence' Putin (male or female) does so quickly for these valiant people of Ukraine!

Does an impartial enquiring mind never think about what
passes between men and women in such situations? One comment mentions Eva Braun. Is there really no curiosity in
what she might have done or said when with the Fuhrer in
the privacy of their personal lives? I find that hard to believe.
Remove the emotive sexist responses and apply a clear bias-
free mind to a very human question of how power can be a
addressed in purely human terms between people who are
intimately related and influence each other in the closest
ways. It is not a matter of "blame" - as seems to be assumed
so readily in the sense of "outrage" seen here. It is posing a question about human interaction in extremis with the eyes
of the world upon those concerned.
Go back a little in history and check a
certain Eva Peron in Argentina. The
world was fascinated by her.

'Putin's Women'? Really? Grow up, MC

<Deleted User> (32907)

Clare, I hear you! As a woman I find the tone of this poem offensive, MC should have more respect for the courageous women affected by this war, and remove the poem from the site..
The title 'Putin's women' is so patronising. The women in these countries are trying to survive, like the other people there. Never mind trying to influence their men.
The Ukrainians are the most courageous people I have ever witnessed. The women there are ready to fight beside the men to defend their country. Mothers are giving birth amid bombs and bullets,. The women of Russia are also courageous, and doing their best. Have a little respect and remove the poem.
I am disgusted too, Clare.

Clare, the admins (as you term us) do look at all work added to the blog section together with any associated comments. Whilst I understand your indignation concerning the central sentiment of this piece (which I feel at best is a very clumsily explained, ‘behind every good man, there is a better woman’ analogy) I feel that MCN’s question is a valid one. The fact that the analogy is benign in the case of dictators etc, is no bad reflection on women per se.
Personally, where Putin is concerned, I don’t think he takes heed of what ANYONE says, let alone what any female influencers he may have (are there any?) deign to pass to him.
I hope this goes in some small way to assuage your disgust and disappointment with us.

I think this is nothing more than misogynistic bile. It is not welcome on this site and you should be ashamed of yourself. I am absolutely disgusted that admin has not challenged this.
'what fails the women in his life' Are you for real!

No offence, but what the hell can they do? I suppose you could ask why didn't Eva Braun do her bit with old Hitler? Of course, we could also blame good old Dennis for Margerate Thatcher's policies? ? Or maybe not. He was a man, after all. Just don't follow your logic, sorry!

I am merely posing the question about what influence they might bring to bear upon the men in their lives when bad things occur. What comes up in conversation at such times is, for example,
surely a matter for legitimate speculation, not to mention basic human curiosity.

I agree with Clare's comment. Women do not exist to hold men back from committing crimes. Everyone is responsible for their own actions.

Are you actually blaming women for men's wrong doings? I am trying very hard to believe that I am misconstruing the message of this poem.
