Thoughts on Water Heaters, Cars, and People

Waiting for the water-heater-repair guy,

what a luxury

to have a tank that produces

hot water on demand,

don't have to build a fire

to heat up a cauldron of water.

Waiting for the car repair to be finished,

what a luxury

to have this horizontal metal box

with four wheels and an engine,

don't have to walk miles every day to gather food and supplies.

These modern things break down,

these modern times are complex,

what a luxury,

even as we yearn for simplicity,

it's okay to laugh when things break,

sometimes people break too,

then we are especially called to love.

Ah people, those things which are not so easily fixed.

Our reliance on things outside of ourselves making us all the more fragile in this world.

I think Bethany has got this right, Hélène. This poem shows us how we should be grateful and how we need each other. Beautiful.

Yes indeed Helene, we don't know how lucky we really are, compared to so many other suffering people, God help them.
Lovely, lovely poem. Thank you.

Bethany
