We need to find more money

On that we all agree;

But as to how to raise it

We all agree “Not Me!”.

UOC - the report about the social housing allocation from the
Labour Government as was is not disputed. And the numbers
unemployed (as distinct from unemployable?) is a very real
source of concern. You don't get owt for nowt - a worthwhile
guide for guiding folk into work according to their abilities or aptitudes. It is in no one's interest that these can be paid to
do nothing, either for country or self.

I never accused you of that, John. Envy and politics aren't good bedfellows.

Two old quotes always come to mind when this discussion comes up: "Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose", and "some animals are more equal than others"! 😕

Yeah, millions. Well, 1.4 million anyway, according to the ONS, compared to the actual millions during Thatcher's time.

“it seems…”?
Actually, I'm prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt on that, MC…'cos only the other day, I was chatting to a bloke in the pub who said that he heard 30p Lee saying on telly that there are quite literally “millions” of completely fit and healthy people who refuse to work for absolutely no good reason whatsoever.

I think we should kick ‘em out of their social housing, stop their benefits, and make ‘em live in a tent on the village green, or send ’em to Albania, or Rwanda…or something; that’ll sort the buggers out!

I've worked since I was 16 and was taxed, and even now, 64 years later I am paying tax on my pension. Yet it seems there
are millions who don't work at all so who's paying for them now?
Votes can be bought and that is surely the case with today's
lot in Parliament. Equality? You're having a laugh, aren't you?
Working folk and, more relevant, creative business folk who
provide the jobs, are easy targets for politicians who make it up
as they go along as long as they obtain the power of office.
No wonder the business attracts so many from the legal
profession. And we all know what they say about them and
how we know they're lying.

I buy into all of that,Uilleam. But remember the barnpot economics of Corbyn and McDonnell was put to the test of public opinion and we all know how that ended for us.
As a pensioner I’m more than happy to lose my winter fuel allowance. (Incidentally, so are all of my OAP friends). Personally. I’d be happy to pay more income tax to fund the NHS, schools, defence, transport and the raft of infrastructure we have seen decline. I’m less impressed with anyone who wants me to do it for them.

John, I remember the tired old trope being bandied around by theTories and the current red-tied brigade, who've long ago abandoned any pretence of socialism, that "they (true socialists) are indulging in the politics of envy".
Making sure the most vulnerable of us are properly looked after, and have the same opportunities as us the more fortunate, was never about envy, but about justice, and ultimately, about peace.

Uilleam, Martin - I’ve never predicated my socialism on the envy of others getting bigger gulps of air than me.

I'm with Uilleam here: the axe always seems to fall on the softest wood! Pensioners, then two-children families. Never on the wealthier, never on those who can lobby their way out of paying. Meanwhile, those near the top of the gummint get given fancy clothes, season tickets etc by...the wealthy ones.

On reflection, John, that figure of “£22 billion” seems uncannily familiar.

In 2016, in order to mitigate cuts to social care and public health, we were told the NHS needed to deliver ”£22 billion of productivity improvements”, allegedly, to provide “better value”.

A figure that trips nicely off the tongue, handy for propaganda / bull…’t purposes; pure coincidence or what?😏

Quite right, Telboy. I’m more than happy to stump up.
Wealth is a queue, Uilleam,. You want those in front of you to stump up more. Those behind you think you should!

In right-wing think-tank speak: “We need to make hard choices” = not taxing the wealthiest more.

John, you know how you tell us often about all the money you got from various employers for telling them what they already knew? Time to cough up matey!
