The Year That Ticked Too Loud: 2024

Two dozen and four, a year to recall,
With laughter and dread, we weathered it all.
A leap and a bound in the calendar's stride,
Yet peril and promise walked side by side.

From skies of electric, green heavens were torn,
Auroras that danced where smog once was worn.
The planet still warming, though chatter grew fierce,
While glaciers wept tears no words could pierce.

Trump rode again, a thunderous steed,
A fractious revival for hearts that still bleed.
Divisions like chasms widened the stage,
And ballots were battles of spiraling rage.

The east was ablaze—Ukraine stood unbowed,
A hymn of defiance, a nation enshrouded.
Peace sought its voice but found none to hear,
As war made its harvest of anguish and fear.

Yet humankind sparkled, resilient, absurd,
With memes as their armour, and hope in each word.
In science, they flourished: AI took its role,
Not just to outthink but to "aid" every soul.

Mars grew  much nearer; we sent more machines,
Chasing the red dust and interstellar dreams.
Books still were written, and kindness endured,
Though greed’s noisy engine remained poorly cured.

The markets all tumbled, then clambered anew,
While workers spoke boldly, demanding their due.
The rich built their bunkers, the poor built their bands,
And humanity clutched at the time’s fleeting sands.

What lessons now linger as the year turns its face?
That progress can stumble and still keep its pace.
That humour and grit, through turmoil, survive,
And as long as we struggle, the future’s alive.

So drink to the madness, the folly, the fight,
To what we got wrong and what we got right.
For 2024, you unruly spree,
Was both curse and a marvel of humanity.
