My Violin (the Musician’s Tale 2 )
My Violin (the Musician’s Tale 2 )
I’m trying to learn the violin
Wretched guitar’s neglected
Since chords and me just don’t get on
A new instrument’s selected.
But when I draw my bow across
To play a gentle tune
The notes escape with manic screams
Like air from a balloon.
I’ve studied all the tutors.
I’ve practised all the scales
But still my violin sounds like
An unmelodic whale.
I’ve worked on my vibrato –
The strings won’t sing – or even talk.
The folk all cringe and say it sounds
Like a blackboard scraped by chalk.
Alas my plans to thrill my fans
With dance tunes at the ceilidh
Have fallen flat, so I think that
I’ll try the ukulele.

A wry, immediately recognisable "take" on the
difficulties met learning a musical instrument.
You could have fun with the ukelele! It was
the one musical instrument that could be strummed to provide an acceptable accompaniment
to many of the songs of yesteryear - and the old (and not so old) songbooks provide the
finger placings above the stave. I became quite good at "Camptown Races" (doo-dah, doo-dah!) and a few others that shall be nameless.
