Ode to Perfection

entry picture

I got someone to mend my door, it rattled in the wind perceptibly,

They worked quite hard and crafted carefully, to make it fit perfectly,

But when they had gone there came the sunshine, rain and frost,

Then the door I could not shut, no matter how much my temper I lost.

I got someone else to mend the door, they were fast and clever,

Very self important, very smug and very efficient, full of grand endeavour,

They put it on too strong a spring, quick and crisp, no one could get in,

The door I could not open, it seemed I could not win.

I tried still someone else to mend the door, they were slow and meticulous,

They measured and adjusted, oiled and tested, until it was ridiculous,

The door they made too loose, the spring they made too slow,

So now the door let in draughts and dust and snow.

I got down to mend the door myself, I knew just what it needed,

No good getting someone else, my specifications would go unheeded,

The door may still be not a lot of good, but I put it right as I understood,

It does for me exactly what I want, I am content. Perfect is what I meant.

The frustrations are enjoyably conveyed...DIY can be the best way when the professionals have failed. As the saying goes: if you want a job done right, do it yourself! I have a second floor flat door that displays the various characteristics described in these lines. When that's indoors, it's weird!!

Yes, thanks for that Yvonne, it is a good idea.
I struggled to make that work and thought the mid line rhyme a clever idea. Perhaps to so?

I had a lot of fun reading this with all its wonderful rhymes. For some strange reason I was reminded of 'The Gas Man Cometh' by Flanders and Swan. I'd have made the last line folowed the rhyme pattern rather than going for the midline rhyme, maybe like:- 'Now it's a perfect piece of wood'
