THE BEST AND WORST OF THINGS

I once knew a guy you would never call shy

From the way that he acted and dressed;

He'd say "It's no shock when the world wants to mock...

I've been called the worst things by the best".

Then there was this gal - she was more than a pal,

By nature most generously blessed.

I'd buy her a drink and she'd say with a wink -

"I've been called the worst things by the best".

Her dad was a cop - never aimed for the top

But he aimed for an accurate arrest.

Never needed a gun but he'd say to me "Son...

I've been called the worst things by the best.

But if you set your face on that number one place,

If you think there is nowhere but first,

It's as sure as the day you'll be able to say

"I've been called the best things by the worst".

If you seek the top without caring to stop,

There'll be plenty who'll think themselves cursed,

Praying in your wake you succeed for their sake...

You'll be called the best things by the worst!"

I like the metrical approach too!

I confess to relaxing by recalling lines that rhyme in rhythm, if that counts as "thinking in metre". We should be allowed our eccentric ways, don't you think? Besides, I read that exercising the brain is a top method of defying mental decay and should be encouraged at every opportunity.
I'll happily delay the arrival of the hearse
With rhyme, scan and metre embellished by verse!

Yes, indeed, MC. Yvonne and Harry say it all.
I had 20 years in coalmining and I had bollockings off good men so the odd jibe from some clog-lump these days doesn't even scratch.
There are a small number of us on here who swing the metre and Harry's right, yours is one of the easiest (meaning easy on the ear) styles.
Here's a daft question, "Do you think in metre?"

A sad reflection of how the world can turn on you. I, like Harry, enjoyed the pace and rhymes of this. Nice one. XX

M.C.
I was once made to read Spencer`s Fairy Queen all the way through, and came to the conclusion that in his personal style that man could turn his rythmical hand to anything, that`s the feeling I have about you.

I like the single syllable worded and the internally rhymed lines, they rattle along like a tommy - gun.
