Your poems wanted for school’s poet tree

entry picture

What a superb way to use the talents of our huge online poetry community! Brennan, Charlotte and Kinny (pictured with Stephen Mellor) of Kingsland Special School  are looking for poems suitable for a small group of 10-year-old pupils to hang on their poet tree, created by teaching assistant Jacquie Thornton and her colleague Hilary. This wonderful idea came to Jacquie on her way home from a Marsden Write Out Loud session, to use poetry as part of a communication group to help pupils gain experience of speaking and listening. Poems should be simple and accessible enough for pupils with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties. For example:

My Dad

I went to see a Rugby match
They threw a ball for my Dad to catch

My Dad he ran and chased that ball
That ball wasn't even round at all

They shouted things he had to do
You wouldn't believe the air was blue

My Dad he ran up and down the grass
With that ball to make a pass

They kicked that ball high into the air
Missed the goal and made the crowd swear

My Dad he grabbed that ball and ran
He gave it to his biggest fan
Thanks Dad!

Opened in September 2002, Kingsland School has up to 70 places for pupils aged between two and 11 and is Wakefield’s only primary day community special school.

As well as poems for the tree, Jacquie has invited local writers in to talk to the group. This has been so successful that she is hoping others might follow suit, the sessions being on Thursday mornings from 9.30 till 10.30.

You’d be following in the footsteps of Write Out Loud poet, Stephen Mellor, who has already delighted the pupils with his work. He offers this advice: The young people apparently find it difficult to talk outside the classroom, so all Jacquie was really wanting from me were poems that would encourage them to speak.

This being a national website, you might not be close enough to Wakefield to be able to help Jacquie, so I wonder if readers might know of other, similar schools in their area where they could offer their services? If so, if you find out the contact details for us, we would be happy to contact them ourselves and let them know of Jacquie’s work with a view to creating something similar in other parts of the country. If it helps.

So, if you fancy sending Jacquie a poem, you can do so via kingwilliam@kingsland.wakefield.sch.uk

Thanks for your anticipated help with this.

Great stuff - I sent this...

The Barbary Ape

There's a barbary ape who cuts my hair
And he makes me sit in the barbary chair
With the sides hacked off and the back all square
It's a bit of a mess but I don't care

Just joined up. Couldn't resist the lure of bogies. Here's a wee offering which I think I subtitled "Green is the colour of my true love's hair":

SNOTABOGIE

"Bogie!"
"Snot!"
"It is so a bogie."
"No it's snot."

One from me...

Cats and dogs

When I go walking in the park
(promise I won’t go when it’s dark!)
I like to take my friend with me
He is a dog, he’s called Pippy!

He’s quite small but his tail is big
He’s got long hair, not like a pig!
He always smiles, he just can’t frown
He cheers me up when things seem down.

We love to jump into the leaves
All piled up beneath the trees
Sometimes we’re muddy – we don’t care!
With wet raincoat and soggy hair!

But when I get back where it’s warm
Another friend sits by my arm
All cosy on the red settee
My lovely cat – called Anne-Marie!

So here's another school related poem (whether you like it or not)

The Visitor

Ofsted is in school today,
I heard a grey faced teacher say.
I’m not too sure what Ofsted is,
But everybody’s in a tizz.
They must be very hard to please.
I saw our teacher on her knees
Offering up a little prayer
I think I even heard her swear.
Ofsted’s testing every class.
The teacher said she hopes we pass,
Cos if we don’t she’s up the creek
And looking for a job next week.

Dave
Wonderful tradesman poem - which made me think that there must be other similar poems to be written.
Here's my effort which is also winging its way to the school

The Plumber

The plumber’s come to school today
His name is Dave, his hair is grey
He’s come to fix the classroom sink
That’s got blocked up, there’s such a stink.
He pulls a plunger from his sack
Then starts upon his sink attack
He plunges once, then plunges twice,
It’s such a wonderful device,
And then Dave gives one massive push
The children hear the water ‘whoosh’.
The children cheer at Dave’s success,
But now a leak has made a mess.
Dave says that he’ll come back next week
With all the tools to fix the leak.

What a great idea. Have sent this in -

The Window Cleaner

The window cleaner's here today.
His hair is black, his name is Jay.
His funny face makes me smile.
He tells the teacher “done in a while”.
He whistles as he shines the glass.
He winks and waves at the class.
Sometimes his cloth makes a squeak.
I hope he comes again next week.

The Green Giant

Grass grew
So long
Could not
See the
Poet tree.

Electric powered
Lawn mower
Whizzed,buzzed
Cut it
All down.

Now behind
Hanging poems
Standing tall
A giant
Green hill.

Bouncing high
Falling over
Having fun
Dirty faces
Wash again.

The last one that I will post...

My individuality

Living in my own wonderland
They just don’t seem to understand

I would really want them to see
My glee, my personality

The hidden gems, lying, waiting
Emanating, fascinating

Appreciate all I can be
My individuality

Well I'm loving reading these - I do hope other people join in. It's quite a challenge writing for children - something I've never consciously done before. I'm going to send a poem my daughter wrote age 10 - it might inspire a few youngsters to have a go - also to realise that poetry doesn't always have to rhyme - though I must admit, kids seem to prefer it when it does.

Some wonderful messages to teach and reinforce through poetry : )

Keep them coming!

Sometimes…

Sometimes I feel I want to scream
People can often be so mean
Instead, I smile back at them
Melting their hearts and anger too
Yes, this is what I want to do !

My effort - emailed to relevant address:

Someone gave me a gift today -
it didn't have wrapping or bright shiny bows.
It wasn't a gift in the usual way,
Not a scarf or a hat or warm winter clothes,
but it made me feel warm in the same kind of way,
from the top of my head to the tips of my toes.
Well I liked it so much that I gave it away
to make someone else warm, because everyone knows
it doesn't cost much and it lasts quite a while,
so make someone happy - and give them a smile!

Great project for a very fitting cause. Wishing you every success.

Regards,
A.E.

Here's todays effort for the tree (which I have emailed direct to the school)

Mum & Dad

Mum and Dad, they love me loads
They clean up all my mess,
They say they’d love me more
If I made a little less.

Mum and Dad, they serve up food,
Some I really hate,
They say they’d love me more
If I ate what’s on my plate.

Mum and Dad say they know best,
They tell me what to do,
They never ask what I would like
Not fair, I think, do you?

Mum and Dad are superstars,
The best I’ve come across,
I let them think that they’re in charge,
But I know who’s the boss.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your interest in our project.
As WOL have a policy to gain permission before any of your poems can be used, we need you to give us that permission and the easiest way would be for you to send your poems to the web address we have set up for this purpose.
kingwilliam@kingsland.wakefield.sch.uk
I'm sorry to labour this point but as it's for school we have to do things by the book.
On a lighter note if anyone would like to come and try our poetry chair all it will cost is a poem or two.
We have already had four prospective suitors, two of which are from WOL, Steve and Fred and hopefully Margaret will be our third.
Once again we would like to thank you for your support.

I'm sure Jacquie (and the children) would appreciate it

ps I'm only joking Steve. I think it's probably a bit too revolting to read to children or have hanging on a poetry tree. Most people have more delicate stomachs than mine :)

I've always been very fortunate that my kids never picked their noses - but millions do - in schools everywhere - even 10/11 year olds - and many don't seem to be at all embarrased doing it. I think we should spearhead a campaign to stop it and your snot tree could be put to such good use!

Snot Right

Pinkies don't belong up noses
just as much as tongues and toesies
so don’t unpack your trunk and flick
or spear and smear or wipe and lick
Desist! Resist! Go find a tissue
And don’t let bogies be an issue 

Steve,
I think I can match yours for "level".

What I Told My Daughter As She Left For University

I thought I'd give you some advice
now you're leaving home
To guide you through your future life
where ever you may roam:
Wise words, though, have eluded me,
this rhyme will have to do,
"Always check the toilet roll
before you start your poo".

I left the copywrite on on purpose. You never know what kids will nick

Perhaps this could start a trend ;-))

Can anyone remember the name of that young ex Oxbridge poet who used to post on here? He was a fan of John Hegley and looked a bit like David Tennant. Anyway his stuff was short and whimsical and suitable for kids - if you can remember his name and get his permission...

Love it! In fact I think you could do a run of poems on the same theme :) I feel one brewing now - will try to finish and post - though there won't be any need to copy write it - I doubt anyone will steal :)

If anyone needs to know the standard that I set during my visit to Kingsland, please read on.
What you do after that, is up to you :-))

Snot

What is it we’ve all got
like it or like it not
It runs down your nose
And drips onto your clothes
It’s snot

Your nose can’t hold a lot
So don’t look like a clot
Use a hanky, like the Queen
Who wipes her nose to keep it clean
From snot
