Praise His Name With Dancing

“Praise His Name With Dancing”

Thomas went a-dancing

One sunny Sunday morn,

All up and down the hall, for

They did not have a lawn

Quite like the Vicar had, which

Was grand, and never trod

Upon by dancing children.

Or young-at-heart – or God…..

And Thomas kept on dancing

Until he heard the call:

“It’s time for church, so Thomas,

Stop dancing in the hall!

And go and wash your face, for

After the service, we

Are at the vicar’s house for

Cakes and afternoon tea!”

And Thomas, duly chastened,

Obeyed – and never said;

“Oh, how I’d rather stay here,

Dancing for God instead!”

And throughout church, our Thomas,

Who was just six years old,

Sat quietly with his parents,

And did as he was told

But all the while his feet would,

Restrained, long to be free,

And dance a dance fantastic,

So God would smile and see

And later, at the vicarage,

The grown-ups all took tea,

And Thomas slipped away, just

To see what he could see

A glorious lawn! – he slipped off

His little size four pumps,

And danced for God’s own pleasure

With twists, and turns, and jumps

The vicar’s wife was furious

When Thomas she beheld:

“You naughty boy, get off my

Expensive lawn!” she yelled

And Thomas stopped his dancing,

Abashed at what he heard,

Then saw, hopping towards him,

A tiny little bird

It hopped upon his shoulder,

And sweetly, it was sung:

“Forgive them; they have lost the

Sheer joy of being young!”

So, children all, remember,

How God is greatly blessed

With glad and child-like offerings,

In love and trust expressed

“Let them praise His name with dancing…..”

 Psalm 149 (part) v 3 (NIV Bible)

This is based on the love of dance of a small, delightful child, aged six, at church who delights in giving me dancing lessons each Sunday before the service! - it's great, and because I am 68, and don't really care about being awfully correct and all that nonsense, we both have great fun (I'm not very good at all the 'jumping bits', but Thomas graciously allows me to do very small jumps instead!)

Life can be such fun if you allow it to be!...............

How delightful. How pompous some adults can be and how great to kick the traces. Keep on dancing Dorinda and keep on delight us with your poems. XX

Delightful. It has a rhythm that reminds me of an English folk song and content that leaves a reader smiling - and aware of being given a neat lesson in the importance of life's simple pleasures.
