Donations are essential to keep Write Out Loud going

....of words or people

Jostling egos demand a hearing.

Who is listening?

or enjoying?

Scribblers desperate to win, to be read.

Who reads?

or appreciates?

Here is my book it's only three pounds

to buy, I wrote some at

workshops, more on a weekend course, and

did you hear

I won a competition, and

I was second in a slam, and

I had two guest spots last month, and

a magazine this, and

a publisher that, and

he said this, and

she said that, and

I'm getting a reputation, and

I'm getting noticed, and

What? and

Why? and

Where? (is the love)

Enjoyed this Dave.Points to the shallow side of writing/performing that poets can fall into,I guess.'I'm getting noticed, and what? and why? and where? (is the love?)'

Being appreciated by one's peers is heartwarming and never unwelcome, but another side to writing is celebrating the skills of other wordsmiths. I don't need to know what awards have been granted to a particular group of words to know whether I like them ( or Not)Indeed the self aggrandisement is more of a turn-off
One of the Joys of WOl is enjoying and being part of the cameraderie of the comments and repartee between like-minded folk.

It pointedly points to the nonsensical and reflects the shallow can can be shown in everyone if not careful.

The poet and their poetry is only good if people value it. Publication and winning things might be nice, but ultimately prove little. In these things people take themselves too seriously and allow ego to do what ego does.

People - everyone should from time to time remind themselves...what got them into poetry in the first place.

It's usually the love of words and it usually comes from a very genuine place.

The other thing that springs to mind is the importance of listening to the poetry of others. The ultimate service you do each and every poet is to listen to them and truly hear. The ultimate disservice is to not listen or go through the motions.

You can never listen to much.

Best

Dave,
A neat reminder that we`re supposed to be doin` the lovin` while we`re doin` the rest of it.

I like the `what` why` and `where`.

I love communicating with people via poetry too Cynthia - that's what I love about live performance and about this site.

I suppose Dave is just highlighting the danger of when we start to lose sight of other people's worth - when it all becomes about ourselves and our own egos. That's when we stop listening and we stop hearing what others have to say.

Very appropriate lines, Dave, to be well-considered by us all.

I please myself, writing for no one else; but, the thrill of being read, and appreciated, is unparalleled. It's the reader's connection with my personal thoughts that leaves me breathless: I have expressed something 'worthy' of sharing. I'm too proud to push myself on anyone. So - why can't words and people coexist?
