Back To Basic Bacteria

a week ago in prime time a BBC telly report:

- increased prevalence of allergies -

- many more cases these days

- children are too clean

- we need to get back to basic good bacteria

- interacting with animals

- mucking about in earth

- more direct exposure -

premise casually brain-stored

last week in a local shop

a bottle full of small glittery pink chunks:

HIMALAYAN SALT CRYSTALS

how exotic!

I am excited twiddly in my belly

no idea why – but I am

I place it on my condiment shelf

at the front

so I won’t forget I got it

two days later

in a stray sunbeam the crystals twinkle at me

I laugh

I pop a pretty piece into my mouth

mmmm … the taste is – well – salty – seductive

strong !

I spit it into my palm

stare at this saliva-shiny pink crystal

and a memory sparks

vividly

‘eight years old

squeezing between wooden logs of the zigzag fence

racing across the bumpy pasture

dodging cow pies and thistles

fixed on the distant prize

who will be the first to reach the pink rock

in the middle

me! me!

dropping on all fours over the dirty lump

all dips and waves smooth as a baby’s bum

and spitting lushly into the biggest hollow

rubbing off  dried slobber until a spot is clear

pinkly gleaming

then going down

salivating

to lick the rock salt like the cows

licking licking

until my sister says pettishly

my turn!

huddled by the far-off fence

the curious herd shuffles and moos’

time snaps me back to the kitchen

and the rosy fragment in my hand

I laugh I have to laugh

well - that was bacteria exposure to the nth

great new slogan for the Allergies Campaign:

Back to Basics - KISS A COW!

but – wait a minute - actually -

hold the fanfare -

How is Hoof and Mouth transmitted!

I like this a lot Cynthia, it's full of fun and wit. And agree with Philipos in it looking like you had fun writing this.

I don't know how I missed this first time around!

Oh I LOVE this! The gleeful delight that rollicks around each line in the mid-section made me smile as wide as you did :) Twiddly belly :D Fantastic!

This is a such an evocative exciting piece - I have twiddly in my belly just reading it.

Also, like Is, brought up in the same conditions, I am so far from precious about germs I positively encourage them. That, and I am incredibly idle and would far rather lie on my back having a good old think than waste away the day doing bloody housework!

Germ ingestion is a gamble. Allowing germs into the gut etc can be beneficial, it is dependent upon what germ and to what amount. I think exposing bacteria/viruses etc to sun and air can often weaken it and becomes a type of inoculation. We played 'ollies' in the street gutters and were exposed to a myriad of germs including dog dirt. I think the coughs, snivels, sores and tummy aches (especially around the mouth and eyes)could be a sign of this 'inoculation'. I think children's fascination with excrement is an acquired version of this self inoculation.

Food for thought here Cynthia in more ways than one. Yes, saw that programme, beneficial bacteria and all that. After all, koala bear cubs eat mum's poo in order to ingest the right digestive bugs and enzymes to get them kick-started. Liked the way you went with the flow and enjoyed the sheer pleasure of writing. Your work always draws the eye. P.x

There's a lot to agree with in this. I was brought up in a cold house with no central heating and plenty of germs ;) - I now have the constitution of an ox - a good healthy diet with plenty of home made food - I think that's the key to good health - if you have that you can deal with most things.

These lines take me back to when I was a child
playing in the neighbourhood streets. If I was
thirsty I'd drink from a puddle rather than
interrupt the fun by going home! Too much
cleanliness can be counter-productive when it
prevents the body organising its defences in
good time to see off the more serious challenges
to its well-being when they appear. Kids and
muck have always gone (literally) hand in hand.
