SHIP'S MUSICIAN

We went east on the Thames

black tunnel of night

into the mysterious pools of night

on the Silver Barracuda

played the songs of Ry Cooder and George Benson

then the dancing took over,

YMCA thundered through the salty hull

as yuppies, ad-men

celebrated their new found culture

they paid the pipers,

we played the tunes.

The roof opened, underbellies of bridges strode by;

for the musicians below,  one drink allowed.

When we returned, the guests now gone

with a  gaggle of egos at Charing Cross pier

the tide was down, gangplank inclined

       to test endurance; we disembarked

       at Wapping new stairs.

In time the hum of invasive volume

disappeared from our weary heads,

while the confluent Thames covered its tracks

with the promise of another day

with the yuppies and ad-men

still at play.

Thanks Stu for astute observations - this has "dredged up" some fine comments from those I admire greatly .
When the creative flow is sluggish it is nice get the support you need to keep it all going! Ry Cooder, a master of that style , i'll check out Paris Texas. Sorry my reflections on the past career are embittered to an extent. Patronage has always been an irksome necessity to artists but I made my pot when the interest rate was 13 - 15% on loans! Have you a new addition to the family? Congratulations !

also this is wonderful ray. i stopped to marvel at one of the finest rhymes i have ever read, but then kept reading and scraped out loads of cynicism, anger and weariness.

great stuff. i love ry cooder by the way, especially his soundtrack to paris:texas.

David, you have as always exposed the underbelly of motives that epitomised the time, in which I indulged my capacity to pay the mortgage with some sense of offence I must say. A sense of fair play certainly never prevailed in that climate. However, there was loads of work ! Thanks for your interpretation. Your word irrelevance feels harsh but is accurate.

Greg, Thanks for your eagle eye on this; much better to have the subtle approach. I feel more tales bubbling up - at my time of life it feels like a magnus opus on a tiny scale.!!

I like that change, Ray. Your body of work about musicians on the road - and on the river - is really taking shape.

Thanks Greg. I sweated over the metre and chopped it about, because as you know you can ruin a poem if it doesn't feel good. I have noted your astute comment and a very fine point you make. I have altered it and I think this gives still a slight sense of us being the puppets of the masters as it were!
The tragedy of the collision was on all the minds of us at the time . On another occasion the police dropped us off at Wapping where the River fleet is based. Apparently there was a colossal number of suicides in the river during that time, the late 80s.
More musical stuff to come. Appreciate your reading.

Some great poetic music in this as well as the songs, Ray; the Silver Barracuda and Ry Cooder, for instance. Important details, such as Wapping new stairs. I wondered about "Thatcher's spawn" ... is that too spelt out, do you need it with the yuppies and the ad-men as well? Just a thought. For me, the Marchioness and the Bowbelle are the brooding presences lurking in the darkness behind all this.
