DEBRIS FIELD

The car must have lost control

sleep overtaking the driver perhaps.

I came across the debris field

through an unblinking coma at seventy

at three in the morning

       Saw the barrier peeled away

       the black oil trails

sleek entrails of car body parts

       steam from recent heat

       blistered asphalt

no visible sign of shell or body..

A deadly curiosity

rallied my nervous flight

as to how motion wears life thin

on the unplanned edge

of an uncompromising motorway night.

I checked the rearview mirror, the past

so recently cast

and all was quiet.

Thanks Peter. It all seemed a bit unreal at the time.

Thanks Colin - I fear the car went through the barrier and quite frankly what is not seen is a relief in a selfish sense. Quite upsetting obviously and as ever, a poem might follow.....

ditto PeterRay's comments - I like that we don't encounter the body but we find 'sleek entrails of car body parts' which is such a great line - the whole second verse is word perfect - great stuff Ray.

I enjoyed reading this poem. I liked the sense of approaching, seeing and moving on, all with an air of mystery.
