temporary quarter

winds sweep the plains

dusting earth's

never-fallowed ground

while starlings

like schools of fish

swimming the currents

shadow the light that lands

on once verdant fields...

beasts of burden and

human livestock press on

to pay the toll due the

modern robber baron

who hides protected

behind his broken shield--

a nation's economy, capital

its corporate empire and yield.

Thanks, Randall and Stu. When I started this, I was listening to Zeppelin, "No Quarter". But, when it was all said and done, I was listening to this...

I can't say exactly what that has to do with the piece, but I can't seem to get enough.

its wonderfully topical and pointed but what i enjoy most about this is the imagery and the clever way you have used language to leave the overarching message in limbo, until it comes exploding out during the last lines. excellent as ever, the line-breaks before and after 'while starlings' are an excellent use of space.

Post-apocalyptic and hauntingly relevant. This poem holds a lot in a few lines. It really paints a vivid picture of where we are and what's coming. ?
