Evacuees
Evacuees
From packed railway trains
they stumbled along country lanes
Clutching their gas masks and cases
often stooping to tie their laces
Strange faces peered from behind a net curtain
with glances that were quite uncertain
The billeting officer was highly officious
and the children somewhat mischievous
All were found a place to stay
because their homes were far away
The war had uprooted the whole nation
and many had found themselves at the railway station
Free from bombs and explosions
they sat on sofas with huge cushions
No one knew of the war´s duration
but it had caused a lot of commotion

Stu & Hazel,
Thank you for your comments which are much appreciated. Ray was right Hazel as it does lack an ending, a setting to add more character to it.
