WORLD CUP 1966 personal recollections
WORLD CUP 1966 personal recollections
Blue dressed bridesmaid
Bolt down the food, get through the speeches.
Drink up the wine – what’s the time?
Time to put down the serviettes.
Time to …………
Tension is building - Tighter, harder, bolder
The groom, the best man and every one of the ushers are at the starting gate.
More interested in the future than the present.
One dark- haired, pale skinned young woman
Younger than her 18 years, picks up the tension.
Not even knowing that the real importance of this day
was not the wedding, the joy of the couple, the vows now made.
No, the importance is building in the other room,
The room with the chairs
Orchestrated before the box in the corner.
The moment is come, the flag drops
Movement begins.
Bride in pure white abandoned
On the most important day of the year – FOR SOME.
Frothy blue dress, fancy tiara, long blue gloves and matching shoes.
Bridesmaid clobber.
But just the outfit for the football.
Just the outfit to go along in the tide of young fit men
And feign interest in 22 more even fitter young men
Staged on hallowed turf
Performing in triumph
World cup Final with England to win.
Not quite so exciting to her,
As the pleasure of being with those present.

The power of this poem is in the unusual but effective structure that build excitement... Urgency and tension...... And the narrative style
And lol
Nothings changed..... Still the guys at weddings.... Christenings... Will go watch footie in other room
