Message from a 7-year-old

Preamble: In honour of this week's Rhymers' theme "children", here is a poem written in collaboration with my 7-year-old son.

Some people say they don’t like children

But they are wrong.

We aren’t the ones dropping the bombs.

We aren’t the ones firing the guns.

Children don’t kill other children.

The guy on the ground, he’s just doing as he’s told

The job that he’s paid for, loyalty bought and sold,

It’s the ones at the top who have blood on their hands,

Sometimes I think kids should be ruling this land.

Children may do tantrums or be led by caprice,

But it’s not the children that are disturbing the peace.

Hi, thanks everyone!

M.C. Newberry, I do agree with you in fact - believe me I know kids can carry out immense acts of cruelty, when they are too young to really understand the consequences or have the moral compass in place. This just happens to be the views of one 7-year-old - the concept and the first verse are entirely him, honest! (I helped with the rhyming for the rest).

It is most encouraging to have children put their minds to poetry.
Sadly, children DO kill other children.
"Lord of the Flies" comes to mind - depicting how children
create their own hierarchies, judgements and actions...
without adult guidance or control. The irony is that the
adults who unleash the weapons of destruction might be
seen as acting out for real the pretence of childhood games,
almost as if one is a rehearsal for the other.

Something he should keep forever. I still have all the poems I wrote with my mama. When I started writing poetry as a young teen, all I wanted more than anything was to have my own book out with a bunch of collaborators on it. My mom used to write poetry too, and I think that's where I got my idea from.

Either way, a lot better than some of the adult poetry I've seen posted. Great piece.?

It's funny you should say that Brian. Completely independently from the fact that I posted our poem this morning, Erwann has spent the morning in his room turning out little poems, and some of them have quite blown me away. I was just thinking I should set up his own profile. Do you think that's allowed? (I wouldn't put a photo)

Wel done young Erwann...and also your Mum. Why not ask Mum if you can post your own poems on this site?

Why aren't there more child poets on this site?

Yes Erwann it's adults pulling triggers
It's adults who are dropping the bombs
And destroying innocent children like you
And sending them into their tombs

I feel for the guy on the ground
Out of loyalty to the country he came
Betrayed by his leaders above him
Who only want to play their war games

I usually am quite reluctant
Putting your child and you in my poem
But your message it left me no choice Beck
But to leave it the way it was sown
