Grandpa's Checkerboard

perched upon the table

made of oak and maple

stones carved of cedar and sycamore

is grandpa’s checkerboard

 

when mom and dad play rummy

the children squat down on the floor

checkers begin jumping

on that old checkerboard

Grandpa Poem

Grandpa,

Love is something everyone has towards you, For they, too, understand the complexity of you.

Experience is the foundation for your knowledge.

And yet, you still serve cold porridge.

Grandpa, Anger does not influence you, Ignorance does not play you.

And you do not wish for fame, As you have understood, life is a game.

Oh Grandpa, humble and intricate.

Dear grandparents

Your love is like magic

You spent 53 years and counting together

 

Grandfather you went throught war

You went thrught cancer

She stood beside you whn you really needed her

 

Grandmother you went through injuries,

Surgery and birth, who was there to

Hold you and love it was grandfather

 

I love you both ...

Lunch with my Grandmother

Those huge white flakes of fish

And the mashed potato dish

Have stayed in my memory

For sixty years

 

I remember the potato, creamy soft

Had a seasoned, peppery waft

And the choice of sauces:

Egg or parsley

 

It must have been a whole side of cod

I remember my grandfather like a god

Slowly stood to serve the fish

Separating the flakes

 

The etched glass...
