I heard the shots, I did

And my siblings being dragged screaming

Out the door

 

My father ran, carrying me like a football

Up into the hills and miles away

Terror in his eyes “Which way now?”

      

Into the truck, freezing at night

Dumped on the shore

There was no need to ask

“Are they coming too?”

Tenant of the Sea


He witnessed the rise and fall of the tides

Of the sea that seemed so milky in the moonlight.

Gloating over its graceful strides,

The rumble of the colossal sea was all he could hear that silent night.


The stars twinkled in the darkness,

And the moon in the blackness

Gazed dotingly at him and his boat,

As the decrepit carrier carted its master swiftly afloat.

Homes deserted

Destroyed by power and prejudice

The blood encrusted brick and concrete dust,

The remains of living, of hope

A memory now

Replaced by pain and hunger

While legs worn and weary,

On shoes broken by endless footsteps

Camp in a pulverized arena

Undefeated,

The donated blanket,

The small gifts of living, a hope

A future, I wander, I wander
