Woodland Dell
Down in the woodland dell
beneath tall, slender trees
lies a deep blue carpet
that quivers on the breeze
Sunlight filters through and
shadows cast on the ground
the shallow stream sparkles
plays a soft, soothing sound
The mossy fallen tree
is the place where I rest
brush through feathered ferns
my hearts slows in my chest
I close my eyes and breathe
and relax for a while
my ...

Hedgerow
A month of persistent rainfall
gave us plenty to moan about
A change in the weather today
we rejoiced as the sun came out
We walked along the country lanes
dense hedgerow lined our way
All the hues of a spring rainbow
made for a delicate display
Glossy buttercups tall and bright
sturdy dandelion below
Frail with age they become a clock
disappear with a puff and blow
Red campio...

Reasons To Be Grateful Week 4 (Final Week)
A task set to capture the moment
when I felt grateful in any way
As I reflect on this week gone by
with a photo taken every day
An early evening walk
casting tall shadows down the lane
A late afternoon walk
during a brief break in the rain
The colour of rhododendron
to brighten the dullest day
A date booked in my diary
for a weekend getaway
Springwatch is on the TV
but my focus ...

Meeting John Bishop
A memory on Facebook
from four years ago today
a trip to the theatre
which was subject to delay
Delayed due to the tragedy
of the Arena bombing
John Bishop shared a video
this message left me sobbing
His sentiments so heartfelt
the emotion overflowed
he felt is was only right
to postpone upcoming shows
I watched him through floods of tears
as he shared his thoughts that day
I w...

This Is Me
Sometimes happy, sometimes sad
sometimes good, sometimes bad
sometimes hot, sometimes cold
sometimes shy, sometimes bold
sometimes dull, sometimes bright
sometimes day, sometimes night
sometimes curly, sometimes straight
sometimes early, sometimes late
sometimes right, sometimes wrong
sometimes weak, sometimes strong
all the above I can be
these things do not define me
always true, car...

Springwatch
A month of persistent rain
has nourished trees, grass and flowers
Lush fodder for the rabbits
who happily munch for hours
Springwatch is on the TV
but my focus is drawn outside
I watch rabbits feed and play
their antics keep me occupied

Tall Shadows
An early evening walk
up and down Gallowber Hill
Warm sun on our backs
no breeze, the air is quite still
Lambs relax in green fields
mellowed by the soft sun rays
Protective sheep keep guard
firmly meeting our gaze
Rabbits take off in flight
safely back to their burrow
Busy birds search for bugs
in and out of wild hedgerow
A break in the weather
no sign of the forecast rain

Stage Left
Today in the old Churchyard
scent of grass recently mown
A new pathway created
leads us to this old gravestone
Wild flowers among tall blades
subtle, delicate and free
Sounds of various birdsong
low buzzing of bumble bee
Stage left and stealing the show
Trumpets dazzle and delight
Magenta rhododendron
a symphony bold and bright

Sunday Tranquility
Peaceful, calm, relaxing
Sunday tranquility
Ripples on the river
Flow gently to the sea
A cool breeze blows softly
Through new leaves on tall trees
Darting Swifts swoop and soar
Low buzz of busy bees
Fields tremble and whisper
Bright yellow, gold and green
Springtime in Great Britain

Faster Than A Bullet
Startled by my presence
White bob tails in the air
Two young timid rabbits
I did not mean to scare
Faster than a bullet
Taking off in low flight
Straight back to their burrow
Out of danger, out of sight

Downfall
A break in the weather
A brief pause in the rain
We head out for a walk
Before it starts again
The River Lune runs fast
A deep turbulent squall
We get back just in time
Before the next downfall

Kaleidoscope - Rehashed
Sat staring blankly through my window pane
Distracted, dismayed by the constant rain
I think of all those young hopes and dreams
Trickling downwards like the rivulet streams
The rain washing those ambitions away
Flowing down the drain for another day
I feel for the young and their hopes and dreams
Now lost and rinsed away in flooding streams
I bring myself around, tell myself I must no...

Reasons To Be Grateful Week Three
A task set to capture the moment
when I felt grateful in any way
I reflect on this week gone by
with a photo taken every day
The early evening light and shadows
admiring the colours that they bring
Watching the garden grow and blossom
thanks to the miracle of spring
Receiving my second Covid jab
praise and thanks for the fabulous NHS
Looking forward to a night out
finding I still fi...

Sweet Dreams
above the trees and roof tops
floating across the sky
a heavenly display
shapes divide and multiply
an early evening sky scape
drifting clouds pass on by
pretty pastel colours
a candy treat for the eye
sugar coated almond hues
pale blue, pink, peach and creams
melting away my worries
my hope to dream sweet dreams

Another Milestone
Along the road map to our way out
we reached another milestone today
We can take a trip to the cinema
or visit the theatre to watch a play
Thirty people can gather outside
indoors it’s two households or up to six
Masks and social distancing keeps us safe
as we venture out and begin to mix
Travel abroad is allowed once more
as long as the destination is green
We can holiday, take a ...

Jordan Banks RIP
A young footballer taken from this world
Just having fun, doing what he loved best
An amazing boy with the biggest heart
Raising funds to help others was his quest
In a final act of awesome kindness
Now three families send their love and thanks
One life tragically lost, three may be saved
Rest in peace, the brightest star, young Jordan Banks

WOL Anniversary
A comment made on here last week
Took me back to a moment in time
Led me to revisit my WOL blog
To my very first attempts at rhyme
Today is my anniversary
A year since I came across this site
A year of being grateful
For the kind likes and comments on my writes

Reasons To Be Grateful Week Two
A task set to capture the moment
when I felt grateful in any way
I reflect on this week gone by
with a photo taken every day
A glorious sunny evening walk
feeling the sun's warmth on my face
We both agree how lucky we are
to live in this beautiful place
Our cosy Saturday evening
a TV film night just for two
A short Sunday stroll together
appreciating the woodland view
I sit and w...

Ripples
Calm, serene, peaceful scene
Ripples gently radiating
Birds rejoice the new day
Lake mist slowly dissipating
A moment when time stops
Close your eyes and absorb the peace
Keep it in your minds eye
Draw a deep breath, hold and release

National Limerick Day
The travel list is like a traffic light
Available to read in black and white
Red, amber and green
No shade in between
Feeling blue with no holiday in sight
A funny limerick I tried to write
I tried my best to get the rhyming right
My limericks were so bad
It made me feel tired and sad
This rubbish attempt took all day and night
PS I am rubbish at limericks

At Last
Breaking free through the thick ice
From the deep, dark depths below
Bright light stings exhausted eyes
Bathe in the radiant glow
Awakening all senses
Notice the pressure decrease
Draw in each breath of fresh air
Slowly exhale and release
Emerging from the darkness
Comforted, safe, warm and snug
A moment long awaited
At last, embraced in a hug

Come Dine At Mine
Their visits should be discouraged
but, they are so cute in every way
I love to watch two young rabbits
frolic in my garden every day
They come to help with the weeding
keeping the dandelions at bay
They bring much happiness and joy
like watching two small children at play
Teasing and chasing the blackbirds
a double act, a mischievous pair
Innocently flashing their white tails
hoppi...

Escape Room
A short walk today
led us to a shaded dell
Where lay a vibrant carpet
of fragrant bluebell
Following the narrow path
treading carefully
Down to the shallow stream
beside the fallen tree
So peaceful, calm and still
no one else to be found
The gentle burbling brook
rhythmic hypnotic sound
Close my eyes and breathe
take a moment to unwind
Keep this image safe

Bluebell Woods
In the enchanted forest, far, far away
rabbits dress in waistcoats and chat about their day
Fairies live in toadstools, deep in the wooded dell
they sing and dance to the chimes of the quivering bluebell
An Enid Blyton story, a fairy tale or dream
or closer to the truth, than at first it would seem
Down in Bluebell Woods, which is not so far away
the magical spell of nature creates a myst...

Tonight’s Walk
The end of yet another week
it’s been cold for the month of May
A cruel mix of hail, rain, and snow
the skies mostly cloudy and grey
The weekend is now upon us
and the sky is sunny and bright
We enjoy a long evening walk
early evening on Friday night
We cross over the old stone bridge
the shallow brook calm, still and clear
Curious young lambs take a drink
distant birdsong is a...

Reasons To Be Grateful Week One
A task set to capture the moment
When I felt grateful in any way
I reflect on this week gone by
With a photograph taken every day

A favourite view comes into sight
Sunday dinner cooked just for me
A freshly made bed and a good nights rest
An appointment at the hairdressers

The Fourth Of May
There is snow on the distant fell
The sky is heavy, dark and grey
Cold, wet, dank and gloomy weather
My outlook for the fourth of May
This view reflects my emotions
The world feels heavy, dark and grey
Cruel, harsh, mean and unfair real life
Throws worries and concerns my way

Dawn Chorus
At 4.30 I lay there wide awake
Not woken by the alarm clock ringing
Wakened by the dawn chorus performance
Loud and proud the garden birds are singing
I wonder what they find to sing about
So early, each and every morning
Could it be they just give praise and rejoice
That another brand new day is dawning

The Covid-19 Memorial Wall
150,000 lives are remembered
Illustrated by each heart on this wall
At over half a kilometre long
There is a space and a place for them all
One minute on this memorial walk
Represents 15,000 lives lost and taken
One heart, one loved one commemorated
Lost too soon, gone but never forgotten
