THE GIRL WHO DID JIGSAW PUZZLES
At Clanricarde Gardens on a stuffy summer's night
I dropped a waitress at her flat
on a considered whim though undermotivated,
and she asked me in.
Through the marooned shell of a hall
and up the stair, no carpet
to soften the tread or tame
the lighted glare.
It was never designed to be a conquest,
she was dumpy and plain

KITCHEN PORTER

by scooter back to bedsit
many stairs to the top of the house
his only rise in life.

dreams of

Enraged, he pressed in the light, ascended the stairs
past doors for other lonely folk
sickly glow a ray of hope for
career advance.
All around his life a threat of Akrotiri,
