Cottage Cheese

My dad was a mystery to me

he never said too much

it was just the way he was

all the time I was around him though

he loved his cottage cheese

he ate it every night before going off to bed

capping off the day

as a kid

I could never understand why

he loved his cottage cheese so much

in my opinion

it looked strange and tasted weird

and left a funny taste in you mouth

my dad is no longer here

so I can talk about him

the odd thing about it is

now in my older years I myself

have somehow developed a taste for

you guessed it

cottage cheese

I think about him every time

I take a bite of those white curds and

now I know why it appealed to him

It fills you up

it's non-fattening

and it's fun

like eating snow flakes

So now I am closer to my dad

in an odd sense

our mutual connection

our cottage cheese

he's probably looking down

at me right now

as I have a bowl of it

before going off to bed

and with that little smile

he used to have

he's smiling at me now!

Funny, as usual, but also moving! It's weird how we go back to things from our childhood which we didn't understand at the time. Not many kids like cheese, in my experience anyway. One has to admit it smells strange and sometimes tastes so too. One appreciates it later on.

I have similar memories of my dad who passed in 1994, and if I ate his secret stash of cookies without permission, I would be beat down to the floor. I love you dad, but DAMN, they were just cookies. A lesson like that I can not ignore, If I think of a fig-newton cookie, I will vomit violently on the floor. And I want to let you all know, that way before turning 18, I did bolt out of that homes door. those are memories I wish no longer to explore. by the way I love cottage cheese. Great poem, I am very pleased.
