Seeing Red

entry picture

Dizzy with sweet yearning perfume

the swooning scent of fragrant orange blossom.

Clump of pink purple-veined mallow flowers

where spied a fire-coated fox snoozing below.

Allseeing  gold-ringed dark amber eyes

looked up and registered me harmless

as I gazed admiringly at his glowing curves.

No stone or pitchfork, gun or snarling dog

so serenely he dropped off again

understanding no harm was meant him.

Thus gladdened by our mutual trust

walked on over the golden dunes to the sunsparkled sea.

Lovely.
So wonderful when humans and animals can get along together!

This poem reminds me of the lion lying down with the lamb. An absence of fear.
Thank you for this

A carnivore-free similar experience was my happy lot during a long-distance walk across Scotland, passing through a forested
area, when one of my companions held a finger to his lips and
pointed silently off to the side of the track. There, curled up but
watchful/curious as we moved on past, was an infant deer. We
saw no sign of "Mum" and had no wish to do anything that might
cause a separation of any sort. The creature seemed unfazed by our presence and was still "in situ" when we looked back down
the track. Sudden encounters of this sort certainly provide a
lift to the spirits.

Thanks Stephen G. this really happened and I had met many foxes before, but usually trotting busily somewhere, with 'no time to stop and stare'. This one surprised me by staying so relaxed!
Thanks again, jennifer
