in celebration of older women

in middle age

her face speaks to me

a fingerprint in time

individual and perfect

it speaks to me

with no words

“i have

lived”

in youth bland

the same as any other

perfect peach

now

later

a vivid venus

goddess

individual

creature

a perfect thorn

amid the safe roses

i prefer the thorn

it knows things and protects the rose

Hi Lydia

I liked this. It reminded me of the Abraham Lincoln quote "Every man over forty is responsible for his face". I'm sure he meant women too.

Some young women seem to aspire to be Barbie Doll lookalikes, as you say "bland, the same as any other". But when maturity and life experience come together with real individuality and femininity in a middle aged woman, Barbie eat your heart out.

Well written, and great sentiments! Our society places so much emphasis on the young and the beautiful.....if more women read and believed in this then less would feel the necessity to go under the knife!!

It does indeed Lydia. I love the poem. You express so well the beauty of an older woman, inside and out.
