Hi Greg, I did visit the Paul Weller display - interesting wiggle into local history about which I felt much better informed especially after being demobbed into this area quite a while back from Pirbright.

I mentioned my visit to a local character who remembers well the man and his group way back to their rehearsal days in local pubs when the music proved too loud for some hard drinking dissenters who weren't very polite to said musicians.

I suppose the fact that PW politely turned down the offer of a CBE speaks volumes about the man. Liked some of his poems too.

Greg,
Only just noticed.
You left me a comment - Wigan or Blackpool?
I think the answer is Blackburn. I assume it was about my team's relegation prospects. Doesn't look good for the coming season though.

Thanks for your thoughts on "No Better Ending".
I know what you mean about inserting "the A19". I always envy the Americans who can get away with introducing San Fransisco or New York or Chattanooga or Route 66 in a song and it's cool. Not the same romance about Doncaster or the A19.

Yes indeed Greg. We certainly wouldn't have words like "defensive", "indiscipline" and "congestion"! Nor probably a unique class system which pre-dates the Marxian concept of an industrial one.
And indeed, probably not one John COOPEY (couper = to cut).

I think what you describe is common where those who have died are deeply loved and missed. One of my sisters experienced the same with her husband - could even smell his breath - it does make you wonder.

Thanks Greg. It does seem a world away in terms of its innocence, doesn't it? I remember going to London on the train several times with my mates to go to Waterloo or Paddington to see those "foreign" regions. 13 years old and going to London on our own? These days you daren't let you kids go to school on their own till they're 21!

Hi Greg

I only started supporting Everton in Autumn 1983 when my son decided he wanted to. Things were dismal then - it was before the great days of the mid 80s.

The game I particularly remember is the last of the 1987 season when we already had the title in the bag, beating Tottenham 1-0. The atmosphere in the stadium was fairly flat considering the achievement. You could cut the complacency with a knife - a lesson if there ever was one about sitting on your laurels in a competitive context.

Thanks for the comments on Big Issue and Sobibor. Mogadishu=Big Issue - a bit of a stretch, though, eh?
I did Sobibor after the story of the conviction of John Demjanjuk. It seemed to me that morality's an easy commodity when we're safely coccooned.

You're always so kind with your comments Greg! I wasn't bird monitoring this time. It was just a three day break. But fog and wind and being on your own does not make for the best of holidays perhaps! I do better when I am combining doing something usefull with a holiday I think. It is an amazing place - I just felt that we didn't quite "take" to each other!

Many thanks for your comments on Woking Junction Greg - not the first poem I've written about Woking's train system though - and having been in the military at Pirbright as a youngster I can personally vouch for some of the romantic goings on with squaddie types plus the harsh approach of the redcaps based at Inkerman throwing their weight about - monochrome days perhaps but I'm sure there were hands reaching out from windows of departing trains which never quite reached the loved one on the station before the steam and smoke obliterated the view.

Thank you for the comment on Newlands Corner Greg - appreciated.

Thanks for the comments on Betty's. You're right about Harrogate. I think it was the original. There are about 5 now though, with 2 in York. You're also right about the genteel ambience. I imagine Betty's to be rather like the old Lyons tea houses - not that I remember them of course!

thank you Greg, yes, thinking about that little bit of heaven on earth that is a bluebell wood here in the Dales did help. I took mum some bluebells from the garden into hospital but don't think she was able to see them as she wasn't really conscious of much but who knows? maybe the scent of them reached her, i hope so. I like that tune very much too, i used to play it on the flute (an old wooden one ala Matt Molloy style)thanks again,Debx

Hello Greg
Thanks for your comments on 84-0.
It is almost a complete copy (idea/structure/rhyming pattern) of a poem by Pam Ayres called 13-0 (complete change there then!). Hers was about her son's debut in the school football team rather like your experience.
Incidentally I have a secret admiration for PA (a crush) whom I think is enormously under-rated.
