Workin' On It---A Poem by O.L. Buzzerd

When you are retired

and don't have no clock to punch

no deadline to meet

no threat hangin' over your head

it is so easy to come up with an excuse

for puttin' things off

why screw up your whole day

doing somethin'

when you can just do nothin' instead

and yet I was raised

to always be doin' somethin'

idleness is the devil's workshop

they used to sa...

When The Gloves Come Off

When there is no more virus

will we still be the same

when the gloves come off

when the masks go way

will we still remember who we were

can we ever go back

two months of isolation

two months of fear and dread

has changed our very lives

and the distance between us

widens our differences

as we have become

even more divided

in a war of words

with wounds

Sheepless In Seattle

If you

can't sleep

then count

your sheep

plump sheep

are neat

with faces

sweet

powder puffs

who bleat

don't drag

your feet

count off

repeat

now you're

asleep!

Eulogy For Trees

EULOGY FOR TREES

We mourn when

any tree succumbs

to rot or drought or age

We mourn their passing

like any friend

who endures this final stage

In life they had

such strength and grace

against the wind stood brave

Their stark remains

reminders of

a life that passed away.

The Silence Of Strangers

Strangers are in town

all wearing masks

suspicious

over cautious

avoiding eye contact

furtive as they move about

distant in their approach

secretive and

not saying much

who are these strangers

who have showed up

in all our places

are they local

are they legit

are they looking to rob

or take our lives

they do not speak

we cannot read their lip...

The Poem That Got Away

There will be

no poem today

one came to mind

then ran away

Words are elusive

much like prey

hide and seek

with poets play

A few get trapped

in light of day

like this one was

despite its ways

So in place of poem

this maybe may

replace the poem

that got away.

MUD PIES

Mud pies

are always apropos

when down memory lane

we care to go

At 4 or 5

playing side by side

after rain it gave us

mud for pies

We even ate some

that's no lie

when sisters served up

fresh mud pies

  Children today

are none the wise

don't know the recipe

for making pies

Fun in the mud

on hands and face

a forgotten art

A DOG'S LIFE

I'm sick of it

every time I get settled in

here comes the owners with the leash

wanting to take me out for a walk

with this Corona scare

it's walk, walk, walk

they act like they can't take a walk without me

I've walked more lately

than I have in my entire life

they think they're doing some good

a walk may be good for Them

for me, not so much

believe me, I'v...

Their Song

Back then

people went to dances because

that's what people did

they dressed up

men in suit and tie

women in nice dresses

they sat at tables with their friends

and talked and talked until

the band struck up

then every dance was danced

by the happy couples

there was no sitting down

that wonderful music was their magic carpet

lifting them above the drudgery...

Vine

oh vine

cling on

wrap round

your host

hold tight

to trunk and limb

scarlet flowers

hummingbirds

ever higher

twist and turn

snake your way

to waiting sky.

Working From Home

We used to GO to work

now work comes to us

my dad used to carry a lunch box

to work everyday for 30 years

everybody made their own lunch

now people carry no lunch at all

they just go to their pantry

which is next door to their computer

it's a little too easy

this working from home

no need to get dressed

no need to find a parking spot

no drive time on bumper...

Caveman Poetry

squat

by fire

warm

feels good

a thought

comes up

scratch words

in sand

wind blows

it away

first

fleeting thought.

Raindance

Half awake

half asleep

I listen to the rain

pitter patter on the roof

soft footsteps of mother nature

tap dancing on the roof

I lean back in my chair

content to just listen to

the lovely song of rain

and let it take me

into deeper slumber

who does not love

to fall asleep

listening to the rain.

Risky Business

From out of the Corona Virus scare

comes many new ideas

I am thinking about creating a new company

which I have named "Risky Business"

since it will cater to all of those Senior citizens

who are in the "high risk" group

those most feared people

most prone to be hosts to the Virus

anything from Burial Insurance

to riding wheelchairs to ventilators

to pills & drugs...

WINDOWS

We view the baby

through a window

we cannot hold its little hand

nor touch its face

we cannot see grandfather

in his last moments

through an outside window

we sadly wave goodbye

we cannot see the couple

exchange their wedding vows

all plans are postponed

the shades pulled down on their future

we cannot worship in the church

the pews are em...

Used Cats

Buy a cat

they're cheap now

marked down

from where they were

around Halloween

some have been

too long in inventory

so they are on special

two for one

a reconditioned cat

is a real bargain

a three-legged cat is free

cats always expect

their bowls to be full of food

and complain if they are not

if you buy a cat

the cat will soon own the house

All Of The Above

Beyond the troubles

upon us shoved

there's inspiration

in their love

Despite the warnings

the danger of

they still proceed

in mask and glove

To all of those

who battle time

who by their courage

shine thereof

To all of those

who dispense love

the unheralded

all of the above.

Ceiling Fan

A ceiling fan

gives out relief

a kindness we receive,

for under it

we always get

soft light and gentle breeze

When heat arrives

humidity thrives

too hot to be believed,

but stuffiness

is laid to rest

by coolness we receive

As blades spin round

comfort is found

no reason to despair,

our happiness

is what comes next

as blades stir sti...

LEAKS

I think

all leaks

are terrible

and

every leak's

unique

but leaks

become a flood

in time

and

overflow

the sink

so plunge

into your

predicament

before you

get

wet feet

I've had

the same

experience

and from

experience

I speak.

About This Poem

Often on poetry sites

the poet will explain

what the poem is about

I always say

if you have to explain it

it is not a worthy poem

poems should be

readable, understandable

simple in their text

and their message

poems should not confuse

or make the reader give up

poems are meant to be read

and enjoyed by everyone

like a simple reader

in first grade

I Don't Get It

If you are coughed on, you get it

if you are sneezed on, you get it

if you are Chinese, you get it

if you dare travel, you get it

if you go out, you get it

if you don't wash hands, you get it

if you don't wear a mask, you get it

if you meet someone who had it, you get it

If you are in a high risk group, you get it

If you are in a low risk group, you could still get ...

Conspiracy Theories

Conspiracies

are hardy things

they thrive on just

thin air

Rumors are sewn

get overblown

fake news

is everywhere

From the internet

false stories sent

their purpose

to deceive

Who can believe

just what you read

it's all

Conspiracies!

Simple Pleasures

There is a field here

on one of the main roads

that was left alone and not developed

it's For Sale

but the weathered sign now leans

for lack of interest

the field in its neglect

is now home to a beautiful patch

of Texas Bluebonnets

that looks like a lake of pure blue water

people come from all over

in the coolness of Springtime

to tromp among...

Don't Mind Me

I wanted to donate

my brain to science

but they adamantly refused

to accept it

saying it was only

a mediocre mind at best

and not worth the expense

of a glass jar

not to mention the time

and manpower that would have

to be spent trying to find out

why it malfunctioned

they said it could possibly be used

for comparison to mice minds

which also are tiny

STIFF

As Winter ends

and Spring explodes

I feel the aching

in my bones

At my old age

it can't be fixed

like frozen limbs

my bones are stiff

Yet around the corner

heat portends

as seasons change

limbs will now bend

There comes relief

when heat persists

how nice it is

not to be stiff.
