Losing It (very light verse)
Of all the things
that you can lose
there's nothing quite as hard
as the losing of your wallet
cause it contains
your credit cards
stolen identity
leads to futility
there's nothing you can do
now someone
has your number and
someone else is being you.

Box Of Words
I put these out
deliberately
this box of
well worn words
left at the curb
of this page
to be picked through
by passers-by
sort through them
at your leisure
see if there is anything
that might fit your needs
a cardboard box
of random words
that could be
refurbished or repaired
maybe someone
could make a poem
the s...

Old Dead Tree
Old dead tree
sticking its head out
above the rest
an old balding man
weathered and worn
bark-less and gray
dead from age
and lightening strikes
it now looms over the woods
a statue without arms
a ghostly figure
seen from afar
it speaks of
what it has been through
saying do not forget me
I gave you shade
I gave you comfort
above all
I gave...

KITE
Kite in the wires
tangled on a telephone pole
ragged red white and blue
busted and broken
splintered in space
holy flag
slowly fading
flapping in the wind
waving goodbye
reminding us
we were all once kids
and all once
kites.

In the Hands Of Strangers
The man I spoke to
could not speak English very well
plus I had trouble hearing him
his words were almost whispers
it was like he was scared of the phone
or maybe scared of me
yet here I was
asking him for help
there was no other place to go
yet he picked up my call
and came to my assistance
we do not like it but
that is how the world works now
we call f...

Teach A Man To Fish
Teach a man to fish
and he will never be happy again
fish stink
fish are slimy
fish leave blood behind
so leave the fish alone
let them swim in their watery world
in peace and harmony
why put a hook in
when you can just do nothing
stare at the water
drink beer
scratch yourself
and anticipate the
fisherman's platter at Red Lobster.

UNPACKING
Where is it?
I think I saw it
in a box somewhere
or did I put it in a drawer
or room?
or closet?
check the garage
dig through the packing paper
is it in the trash can?
I think I saw it
yesterday
but now I forget where it was
in moving
in these new surroundings
I lose track of things
the mind cannot process it all
I forget where I am
I forget ...

Earned Interest
Have you earned interest
on your life
what is the gain
you need
Are you interested
in owning it
brought forward
to succeed
Will life gain interest
as you age
or only trade
in greed
Have interest in
your fellow beings
the dividend
life brings.

NEW HOME
The terrible turmoil
the reluctant parting
feel like we've become
rolling stones
in shuffling our lives
somehow we survive
it certainly sets
a new tone
the bore of unpacking
the chore of extracting
our lives from
what we had known
we struggle with moving
yet things are improving
at last we are in
our new home.

Mixed Emotions
We think of all the memories
attached to this place
the winding road to get here
how it came to be
now in our leaving
we find it hard to let go
we knew it as a place of joy
we look into uncertainty
but life goes on
and places come and go
the place we are going to
begins a new chapter in our lives
so we close the door
and say goodbye
cau...

LAST GASP
This is my last gasp
the last batch of poems
you will receive from me for awhile
We are moving so
we will lose the internet
and all its entrails
until we get reconnected in time and space
In the meantime, if
you have some of my spare poems laying around
with nothing better to do
Put them to work in your head
They will work for free.

Working From Home
I've been working from home
for many many years
it is nothing new to me
and not caused by market conditions
technology or the pandemic
it is caused by a desire to loaf
to goof off
to live a more normal life
like a natural human being
freed from the treadmill
to actually enjoy my Self-
yes working from home
is nothing new to me
it's called Retirement.

Someflowers
Some flowers they are
these Sunflowers
with their giant stalks
as tall as fence posts
they rise up in my flower bed
having come up on their own
even after the brutal Winter freeze
they survived somehow
and are now hardy and strong
reminders of life itself
they project their joy
their resilience
each flower a miniature sun
smiling.

Staying Home
I like to stay home
more than I like to go out
I am comfortable at home
it is my personal space
and I can putter around in it
undeterred by other people
or their opinions
I can move at my own pace
or not work at all
it is just nice to be at home
where there is peace
no traffic
no mobs or crowds
no conflict
no sir
I am at home at home
more than a...

An Imaginary Poem
I am trying to understand
what the term "reimagine" means
if one imagines
why would you want to re-imagine?
wasn't the first imagination good enough?
now it's the cops that they want to re-imagine
as what?
girly boys? robots?
and then there are some people
who have no imagination
what do we do about them?
would they borrow some imagination
or buy some on ...

Will Work For Food
It is Tuesday,
a mediocre day
in the long week
I have nothing to write
nothing to say
my head is empty
along with my stomach
so instead of writing
I think I will go make
something to eat
then I will be full
not of words
but breakfast
a nice trade-off
will work for food.

The Grocery Guy
I am nothing
but a grocery guy
a stocker of shelves
a sweeper of floors
a package boy
just a guy who
goes to work everyday
for minimum wage
I showed up for work
during the pandemic
just like normal
everyday routine
and did my best to keep the shelves full
and the customers happy
yet some now want to call me a hero
just for keeping people fed and sa...

Common Scents
The aroma of fresh bread
baking in the oven
filling the house with goodness
the smell of fresh cut hay
drying in the field
sunshine come to earth
the scent of soap and water
after a long hot shower
so fresh and fragrant and clean
the aroma of a roast in the oven
soaking in its own juices
tempting our senses
making us anxious to eat
the smell of fresh she...

8 Lines or Less
8 lines or less
s usually bes
when defining my poetry
my odd verse
is roundly cursed
there's not much there to see
do not be fooled
but be my guest
skip over what you read
there's not much sense
to any of this
yet I've described my poetry.

WISH I MAY
This poem's for you
it's why I write
to see what thoughts
I might ignite
I wish I may
I wish I might
create a poem
that will delight
This poem's for you
just my insight
for what it's worth
not always right
Still wish it may
still wish it might
instill a rhyme
into your life.

Unassisted Living
I live unassisted
I cook my own food
wash my own car
mow my own yard
I live by my wits
of which some are nit
I do not have someone
come in and clean
or give me medication
or wheel me to the bathroom
I swallow my pills
along with my pride
in saying I wrote this
unassisted
in reply, you may say
I could have used
some assistance.

The Neighbor's Complaint
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Smith,
it has come to our attention
that excessive Lint has accumulated in your lint vent.
We would not normally mention it but...
as your neighbors we notice that
every time you turn on the dryer, it snows.
Our car is constantly covered with lint
and it won't wash away, even when we go through the car wash.
We must also mention that our cat stays covered with lint.
I...

The Hesitant Poet
He's not as dead
as he predicted
he claimed he was at death's door
yet here he is still breathing
still writing poems
I think he is disappointed
in his current status
he was ready for the grave
he imagined his service
the grieving wife and children
praising him next to his coffin
but he keeps waking up
to more tomorrows
oh well he says
I'll die in goo...
