Men Of A Certain Age

entry picture

I hate men of that certain age dressed in brown leather blousons

Faded blue jeans that cry out for an arse

Tired white trainers way past their best

I hate men of a certain age in baseball caps

Gold earrings and large sovereign rings

Adorning black dirty fingernails bitten to the quick

I hate men of a certain age

I hate men of a certain age dreessed in football shirts

On tired benefit Mondays

Shirts that hang limp as charity shop flags

I hate the gaps between their yellowing teeth

And

Tasteless tabloid conversation

Repetition and tired obscenities that leach vile banality

DVD and Sky TV Blockbuster Video boys

Costa fortune

On the yearly Spain plane

I hate men of that certain age

Undressed to kill in the sun

Sangria and skittles

Chips off the block

Old enough to know better than their middle aged children

Instead they dance the night away

In a red sweat haze until the morning

Where a breath smeared mirror

Screams out its honesty to red blind eyes

And

Flaccid obesity dreaming

It is interesting that the only responses have come from women. What does it say about us? I thought I'd break the trend. It is very well observed with some cracking lines. My favourite was "shirts that hang limp as charity shops". Don't know that I've ever seen a brown leather blouson. But would I recognise what it was if I did?My only complaint about this is the big print and large spaces. Why?

'Costa fortune on the early Spain plane' - super humour, very clever. Possibly take poetic license and run this line as: 'adorning black fingernails bit to the quick' because it is 'clipped' in sound and sight. Your internal alliteration and assonance is wonderful to twirl on the tongue, as well as making shafting images. 'Undressed to kill Sangria and skittles Chips off the block ...middle-aged children' is one great line among many, as the short 'i' sound hits like a flack gun.

I loved 'tired benefit mondays' and 'tasteless tabloid conversation', you have so many great lines here and the humour of this is wonderful! I also love the subtle change to a more accepting, almost fond tone and this is just great. I think you don't need that 'I hate men of a certain age' between stanzas one and two as you have it on the next line. Great poenm though, nicely done.

Hi Gus - I love "Faded blue jeans that cry out for an arse" (well, I don't love THAT) it's a great line. The last verse made these men seem quite endearing somehow. But please don't do a follow up about women of a certain age - or I might have to extermintate you! ;-)
