KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE

It certainly helps if the right word fits -

So let us look at "its" and "it's".

When using "its"  - and this I stress...

You have in mind the word "possess",

Whereas "it's"  (and IT'S a whiz!!)...

Informs the world that something IS!

Decisions...decisions. But I've decided to keep mum and occasionally include "definitely"
in my replies. Sneaky? Maybe, but repetition
might work...relatively speaking :-)

and now for your multichoice selection:-

ignore

ask her if she would like to know how to turn her spellcheck on.

send her a little poem to appreciate. call it 'definitely'

none of the above.

YOU HAVE 60 SECONDS TO MAKE YOUR CHOICE
INCORRECT ANSWERS WILL BE PENALISED.

An interesting dilemma. Many of my siblings are crap spellers. The most literate of all my children is also a bad speller. Her nose is constantly in a book and she's a great poet and writer, but she doesn't seem to absorb the spellings the way others do. It must be something to do with the way our brains are wired.

I tend to ignore the mis-spellings of others unless I know them well enough to say something. Even with family, I might ignore them if there are loads. If it is just one spelling that they keep getting wrong, I'd have to say summat about it, I think - in a jokey kind of way. Definite seems to be one of those words that tons of people get wrong - 'separate' is another...

Hello all -
Delighted that my ramblings have supplied some
entertainment. Now for a personal problem -
My sister regularly writes "definately" in her
emails and I haven't the heart to correct her!
Should I - and run the risk of being thought
a smart arse or worse? After all, she is OLDER
than yours truly and should know better.

This simple rule is presented in such a beautiful poetic form! Thank you very much for sharing. Enjoyed reading it not only as a poem but as a helpful grammatical rule.
Now I'll be more careful.
With warmest wishes,
Larisa

Many people - from what I can see -
Have their doubts placing an apostrophe.
Are you sure you're your best
When considering that test?
Then please be my guest - definitely!

Some folk take any amount of time
To be certain they're right in their rhyme
But once they've reached there,
Freed from infinite despair,
There's no ascent they're unwilling to climb!

p.s. I have to admit to not knowing the difference until I was in my 20s - but once it was pointed out, I never forgot it.

A lot depends on how much people want to know the difference. Many people just don't give a hoot about rules of grammar and rules of spelling. In a few years time it may all become irrelevant anyway. Only old dinosaurs like us will insist upon a correct way of writing things :)
