John - just nosied at a comment of yours on Rodney Wood's page and have to tell you that I am deeply envious!! You got to see Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee! They're heroes of mine, I would have given my right arm to have seen them. You'll have to tell me more about it whenever I next see you

Glad you liked the Betjeman poem, John. I've just read A Shropshire Lad - not a typical Betjeman at all. It's got a very interesting rhythm, just like the one that Anthony picked as his favourite.

Glad you liked Out of Season, John. It's set in Appledore in north Devon because that was where my parents spent their honeymoon, and my mother wanted to retrace her steps. But coincidentally she spent all her childhood holidays at Weston-super-mare in the 1920s and 1930s - because her mother's family came from Bristol, I guess. I've come across loads of photos from that era while going through a real treasure trove of papers and pictures since she has moved out of her flat.

I was running late for work when I read and commented on your poem. I didn't have time to look anything up so decided it must be an alternative word for minx. How wrong was I! If you'd punctuated it with full stops, I might have realised it was an abbreviation...

Hello John, Thanks for your comment on 'Sailors Are Very Strange Men'-and I am pleased that you posting led me to your page. Tom Pudding I especially enjoyed-it sent me scurrying to the search engine! As a recent incomer to Yorkshire (my wife is a Wakey lass, this was my passport in!) I am getting a lot of pleasure from exploring this areas industrial past, the fact that people such as yourself are recording it in verse is brilliant. Very inspiring.

Hi John

Thanks for the tip re Augusta... Dont worry on that score ... we are very close.

Thank you so much for the wonderful and extremely flattering comments made to my poem.

‘Raged the Wind’

The catalyst for the poem was one of trying to capture a moment before the world as we know it through history and geology actually deciding to render up the spark that began the development of life. To the dizzy heights and progress of today’s Homo sapiens in let’s say for example in Wigan today.

Once again many thanks for taking the time to read and comment I very much appreciate it.

Gus

No, it's not Scarborough, John; the much balmier region of Hastings! We know Scarborough very well, though; my father-in-law hails from there, and my wife speaks very fondly of her childhood holidays and Peasholm Park.

Ha - I'll confess to not liking salad that much. I am thinking back to a time in Ruislip - there was a beef eater type restaurant where you could have as much salad as you liked but you had to fit it into one bowl. I managed to pile it high - but it was stupid really - it was always the steak and chips I enjoyed the most!

Hi John. Have just received my copy of Along the Iron Veins in the post and wanted to say how much I enjoyed your poem 7 O'clock Brit therein. Not sure I've seen that one here. I applaud the sentiment of it and particularly the lines: "as Lidl trades where walk the ghosts / of Hucknall Central Station." Very poignant words for those of us who still hanker after the pre-Beeching era!

No, I didn't realise you actually lived in Selby, John. You will have seen the Selby coalfield pits come and go in that time. I was there for just a a year in 1977, as a district reporter for the Yorkshire Evening Press/Yorkshire Herald. I drove from York each day. When I used to return from visits down south, the sight of the Ferrybridge C cooling towers on the horizon were like a border post to me, telling me I was now back in the north! PS I've put up a poem, Treading Water, that I wrote a few months ago, about my impressions of Selby as a callow youth more than 30 years ago. I'm sure I'd see it with different eyes now.
