Many years ago I was intrigued by the appearance on Perth roads of bumper stickers displaying the enigmatic statement that "The Goddess is Dancing". I had no idea what this advertising campaign was all about, so I put together my own preferred explanation.

Graffiti grannies they are very canny

they never get caught

but their skills are highly sought

they spin a yarn knit and sow

There cover never gets blown

Statues get covered

As do park benches and poles

Even Chinese boulders

Well I suppose we all need something to do when we get older.

heart

stares at a wall

of graffiti

and thinks

I could do that

so he picks up

a spray can

unleashes

his feelings

in dribbling

white letters

fifteen feet high

his blood

becomes molten

his rage is

a torrent

of years

without voice

a scream

to be heard

Silent Critic

Silent Critic   Unmissable

in letters three feet high

across the bridge

they wrote

“KELLY MATTHEWS IS A WHORE”

and before

the paint was dry

Kelly carved

her sharp reply

in a deeper crimson shade

just two

short lines

as double edged

as Kelly’s blade

exposed the lie

that gave offence

- and their careless

use of tense.
