Pop Up Poetry Guildford v the World Cup, 17th June 2014

June's Pop Up at the Bar des Arts was a great success despite a few glitches - what with glorious weather, Mexico playing Brazil in the World Cup (a lousy draw), our back-cloth screen collapsing and almost braining Dónall, our mic-stand proving short of a rod or two and our stage lighting staying obstinately unlighted. Luckily, all these material disasters happened before the start of the evening....

Spoken Word Supreme in Guildford

The last Pop Up Poetry event of 2012 was  a memorable occasion, a fitting climax to the year where we have built up our audience and our expertise to bring to Guildford a platform where local poets can have a hearing and poets from  London and other centres can make their voices heard in our provincial (dare I say) locality. The evening of December 11th  at the  Bar des Arts, Guildford, was dev...

Pop Up Poetry's NEW BEGINNINGS

We'll have completed a year of Pop Up Poetry soon. We've made so many good friends among the talented people that have come to the Bar des Arts in 2012! We're looking forward to inviting some of them back in 2013, when we'll be hosting the event on the third Tuesday of every month.

Looking back over the year, there have been too many highlights to name all of them separately - the Antipoet ...

Party night at the Bar des Arts on Tuesday 20th November

We're very excited about the next event we're running in Guildford at the Bar des Arts, opposite the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre. It's on Tuesday 20th November, and you can find it on the Gig Guide. It's the only good thing about my turning 21 again the next day - this is my pre-birthday party!

We have five guests, four of whom have been to the Bar  as features before and one whom we've met at se...

Pop Up Poetry - Jamming for Oxfam

Pop Up Poetry's October gig was dedicated to collecting for Oxfam as part of Oxjam month, and we succeeded in collecting donations of £70 from an enthusiastic audience, as well as enjoying a brilliant evening of song and poetry - our tenth monthly event this year.

Dónall Dempsey hosted with his customary blend of Irish charm, persuasion (that's how we collected the £70!) and teasing banter ...

Pagan Poetry in Guildford

Dónall Dempsey & Jan Windle's Pagan Poetry event on Tuesday 1st May at the Bar Des Arts was another amazing evening of spoken word, spiced with double bass and various tympany by the AntiPoet (Paul Eccentric and Ian Newman) and the quiet craziness of Will Hames. Paul aired some of his poetry unaccompanied, too, with his usual intensity and aplomb. Both features were an instant hit with the Guil...
