Nuttin

when they ask me

what i'm doin'

i always say nuttin

it's the best answer

for all those nosy people

who expect you to say

somethin'

nuttin gives you time

to dream

which is a fancy way

of saying i sleep a lot

nuttin is a good excuse

especially if you're old like me

and get plum worn out

by all the busy work of

doin' somethin'

i...

All There Is To See

When you get too old

to see

all the dust on the furniture

the cobwebs in the corner

the stains on your shirt

the expiration dates on food

the warnings on prescriptions

the ingredients

the front page

the street signs

the directions

the fine print

the fact your fly is open

then life is easier

because what you don't know

can't hurt you

until i...

We Wait For Rain

We wait for rain

to soothe the ground

and take away its burn

the grass is scorched

the trees look weak

the flower petals crinkle

and turn brown

we wait for rain

to comfort the tired and broken

fill up the cracks

fill in the broken promises

the weatherman has made

we wait for rain

as summer has no sympathy

rain to bring back softness

to refresh...

Pulse

The beat goes on

60 beats per minute

the heart exclaims

and feels good

rejoicing in life

without fear or anxiety

expressed in time and beat

the song of the heart

the rhythm of life itself

I am glad I still have

a pulse

not having one

is deadly

do not take my pulse

I want to keep it

let me feel its drumbeat

it's steady pa...

Cars & Bikes & Scooters

The freeway is full

cars fleeing the city for the suburbs

but the suburbs are also full of cars

crisscrossing

intersecting

crashing

all have somewhere to go

someplace they have to be

all in a hurry

but the rush hour is not rushed

it is slow as molasses

all the roads are full

the parking lots full

the driveways full

we wait in lines

backed up for mi...

Coming To Life

A dead Cicada

held in my hands

then suddenly

its wings began to beat

and with a rattle

it just as suddenly flies away

I had thought

I was holding death in my hands

but as it turned out

I was holding life

like a miracle occurs

when we hold a baby

in our arms

one beating heart

feels the other

and both hearts

come to life.

Cat & Mouse

cat & mouse

play keep away

the mouse is fast

the cat is clever

the game is on

the cat thinks

the mouse is fast food

the mouse runs for cover

one chases

one eludes

its a dangerous game

like dating

the fun is not

in the catching

the fun is in

the pursuit.

Boys & Books

Give a boy

a book

and forever

he'll be hooked

curled up

in cozy nook

he will read

book after book

blink of an eye

is all it took

something changes

in his look

a lasting love affair

is struck

forever gifted

by a book.

Hard To Swallow

Dentists get rich

on taking of teeth

then jam in crowns

to fill the breach

They grind away

make nice and neat

the Novocaine

wears off in a week

Spit in the cup

you're feeling weak

the Dentist drills on

you cannot speak

Come back in a week

it's cash they seek

your money's gone

along with your teeth!

What I Got To Keep

I have more age than glorious youth

in short, I have grown long in tooth

while things I say are often bleeped

youth fled but age I got to keep

Age intruded fast as fingers snapped

my energy replaced now with long naps

in staying power I am no longer equipped

a step or two I might have slipped

The ones who watch my waning ways

say I am getting too difficul...

Leave Us The Moon

Men on the Moon

have come and gone

yet moon remains

to earth belongs

What would be Earth

without its light

less love and magic

in the night

Oh not despair

the moon is ere

our guiding light

and always there

Our light of lights

lets lovers spoon

just let it be

leave us the moon.

Hearing Loss

As age progresses

I'm confessing

What the wife just said

I'm only guessing

Selective hearing

may call for testing

Yet peace & quiet

is the blessing.

The Inhospitable Hospital

If you've ever been

to the torture chamber called a hospital

then you know

that being released is like

being freed from prison

you are finally home among family

and enjoying a meal

that does not taste like cardboard or plastic

and free from the drawing of blood

the midnight awakenings

the constant poking and prodding

the embarrassing gowns which show your post...

Flip Flops

They used to be called thongs

until the bathing suit industry

took over the term

and made it something sexy

so now they are called Flip Flops

basic footwear

just a piece of rubber

with two straps on top

such simple shoes

best on the beach

because you can wash the sand off

and they float

but you can wear them anywhere

to the gas station

to the store

Man Arrested

for impersonating a poet

and practicing poetry

without a license

the poet claimed he

did not know his poetry

was criminal

but authorities begged to differ

when questioned

he pled the 10th

which is twice as good as the 5th

but it did no good

since there were eye-witnesses

to his offensive poetry

who said they were reduced to tears

and would never liste...

Learning How To Drive

Sit down at the computer

adjust the font

look forward and back

put it in drive and

ease out on the screen

feed a little gas

your fingers grip the keyboard

you are rolling now

let your fingers

steer you where they want

they may take you down a blind alley

but then you can just put it in reverse

back up and start again

practice is the key

you will get t...

Fame & Twitter

What happens to

all those calendar girls

the Hollywood celebs

the "influencers"

once they pass 30

and see their fortunes sag

like skin on a bull dog

their popularity goes

their 15 minutes of fame

over and done

will they have to get

a real job with no skills

go to work at Starbucks?

how sad they did not prepare

they thought a tattoo was all they needed

BEARS

you could be scared

behind those trees

may be a bear

oh by the way

bears come in pairs

entirely rare.

Aunt Dorothy

In the annals of our family

there was Aunt Dorothy

the aunt who was the trail boss

of our family you might say

she was the mother hen

who kept track of all the family comings & goings

her natural nosiness

meant she knew all that was going on

yet she had a heart of kindness and caring

so that people were drawn to her

for consultation and advice

if you...

The Wrath Of Wives

The fly came in

through window screen

no motive known

just sight unseen

it buzzed the wife

she became unhinged

in anger then

sought her revenge

The swatter found

along with her wrath

from room to room

she chased fly's path

the fight was brought

the battle blazed

she sought the fly

for days and days

Then one off day

the fly's mistake

The Pilot

The pilot soared, flew rings around

the eagles and the popcorn clouds

to fly his calling, to it so bound

he never wanted to come down

The pilot flew with such a flair

and only then was when he shared

a time so perfect and so rare

he knew his luck was being there

Bound to the earth, so ill-prepared

to fly took all the time he spared

since a young child h...

VACATION NOTICE

I'll be on vacation

this coming week

I know I know

you are devastated

but make your depression

work for you

turn it into

something positive

just think

now you will finally have time

to develop your own personality

and get some things done

it's a win win situation

the scary part is

I'm coming back.
