Questions Of The Day

I ask questions of myself
each moment of each day
Watching the news constantly
in disbelief and dismay

Is there nothing I could do
is there nothing I could say
That could make a difference
to help take their pain away

Is there something I should do
is there something I should say
Should I stand up in protest
should I bow my head and pray

Which donation should I make
that...

Feeling Helpless And Hopeless

I watch the news constantly
in dismay and disbelief
Feeling helpless and hopeless
as I see the pain and grief

The bright colours of Ukraine
are being shared far and wide
I hope it brings some comfort
to know we stand by their side

I Stand With Ukraine

Do you see the clear blue skies
over golden fields of wheat grain
A sign of solidarity
as the world stands with Ukraine

Do you see the sunflowers
stood tall and proud against the rain
A sign of strength, hope and love
as the world stands with Ukraine

Feeling helpless and broken
watching the suffering and pain
Share a message to show you care
to say I stand with Ukraine

Ukraine

We woke to the terrifying news
as our worst fears came true today
We watch in horror and disbelief
and together for Ukraine we pray

How do you negotiate with one
who is hell bent on having his way
Discussions provide no solutions
no matter what world leaders may say

There’s no point trying to understand
what is going on inside his mind
If we could ask a million questions
I’m...

Online Shopping

To shop for a dress online
it isn’t that much fun
Guessing my size and style
is easier said than done

I place items in the basket
as I go along
But when I get to the checkout
things start to go wrong

Some things are out of stock
for my delivery date
I can’t risk them arriving
after the function date

I can’t make up my mind
my order is still not placed
My basket is empt...

700 Days, 700 Writes

Yesterday I wrote a poem
it was my 700th write
It came up on my website
as I was posting it last night

I wrote about “Freedom Day”
this coincidence I didn’t plan
Yesterday marked 700 days
since lockdown first began

Now I don’t write everyday
but sometimes I write two or three
The chances of this happening
seems a bit spooky to me

Twomorrow Is Twosday

Twomorrow is Twosday
a date of all the twos
I figure this rare date
will be making the news

Twosday is a fun pun
to mark dates colliding
They form a palindrome
twos twogether aligning

Stormy Weather

It’s been a long stormy weekend
Dudley, Eunice and then Franklin
Trees came down, rivers burst their banks
and the 02 roof came crashing in

Today the sun came out to play
encouraging the spring flowers
We took a walk in the sunshine
with no threat of heavy showers

What a difference a day makes
how quickly the storms blow away
The destruction they left behind
seen across count...

Get Well Soon Ma’am

The Queen has tested positive
showing symptoms of a mild cold
At the grand age of ninety five
she is not judged to be too old

It’s expected she will continue
with light duties at this time
At the grand age of ninety five
she is not classed as past her prime

She will receive medical attention
and follow current guidelines
At the grand age of ninety five
she still makes the world’...

Calm After The Storm

A moment to bring some calm
after yesterday’s stormy weather
The sight and sound of a woodland stream
in harmony together

Glistening in the morning sun
meandering through trees it flows
Gushing and rushing
creating tiny waterfalls as it goes

Storm Eunice

Storm Eunice is wreaking havoc
across the whole of Great Britain
I’m listening to the radio
safe and warm in my kitchen

People told to stay at home
as severe conditions are due
There is chaos on the roads
on the railways and ferries too

Big Jet TV films brave pilots
attempt to land in gusty blows
Due to the extreme high winds
some airports have been forced to close

We ar...

West Side Love Story

I went to the cinema
to see the new West Side Story
The tale of two New York gangs
In a fight for turf war glory

Based on the Shakespeare novel
of Romeo and Juliet
Manhatten in the nineteen fifties
is where and when it is set

Maria and Tony fall in love
at first sight and just by chance
Their whirlwind romance starts
as they meet at a high school dance

They shouldn’t be to...

The Grand Old Duke Of York (rehashed)

Oh The grand old duke of York
he did spend twelve million pounds
Well when your mum is the Queen
it’s much easier than it sounds

He took a chance, advanced to go
in a game of monopoly
There was no day in court
and no apology

And then he was free, he was free
to live just as before
Free to live his privileged life
no cares or woes forever more

Sleepy Ladybird

A few hours in the garden
the rain stayed away for a while
Chopping down and tidying up
sweeping leaves into a big pile

It was chilly but calm and dry
on this mid February day
Weather warnings on the news
tomorrow, a storm is on it’s way

The garden looks a little sad
there’s not much colour to be found
A few snowdrops and primulas
sheltering in the sodden ground

Something smal...

Four Seasons In One Day

Dark clouds and blue skies
sunshine and showers
A glowing rainbow
white winter flowers

The deep River Lune
flowing fast and fierce
The whipping wind
whistles past our ears

Deep muddy footprints
puddles on pavements
Sturdy and strong trees
brave the elements

Four seasons of weather
along the way
This is what I saw
on my walk today

We Stick Together

Roses are red
violets are blue
Honey is sweet
and sticky too

You’re stuck with me
I’m stuck with you
We stick together

Scone Or Scone?

They are baked with affection
served up as a special treat
An afternoon delight
which can be savoury or sweet

A variety of flavours
fruity, plain or cheesy
Each one is delicious
to make a choice isn’t easy

For something so innocent
there is much controversy
Caused by this unassuming
national delicacy

Folk question the pronunciation
does scone rhyme with stone
Or does ...

Feathered Friends

Dull, damp and dismal
grim, glum, gloomy and grey
Wet, wild and windy
winter weather today

The birds are still busy
they flock together
A frenzied flurry
and flutter of feather

A volery of tits
come to feast and feed
They seem to eat their weight
in peanuts and seed

The weather may be grim
glum, gloomy and grey
But these feathered friends
light up the dullest day

Sorrowful Snowdrop

Meet the sorrowful snowdrop
he is not so cheery and bright
See his gloomy, green features
painted on his face, pure and white

His expression does not change
he always wears the same sad frown
I wish I could cheer him up
and turn his grimace upside down

He brings others so much joy
and wins everyone’s affection
I wonder if he would smile too
if he saw his own reflection

A place where you can find tailored support
from many helpful services

To raise awareness of this great cause

Wearing this small symbol of help and hope

To Eat Or Heat?

The constant, relentless covid news
seems to be slowing day by day
I won’t miss those boring charts and graphs
and all the data they display

We have been waiting for so long
for a change of headlines in the news
The whole world is sick of reports
about covid and pandemic blues

Now we have a new health concern
it would seem there is no protection
Difficult choices for some to m...

Hellebores And Snowdrops

A show of creamy hellebores
amongst the white snowdrops today
Caught up in the wild, winter wind
they gracefully dance, bob and sway

A taste of the upcoming spring
to uplift, hearten and delight
Promising brighter days ahead
a pretty and most welcome sight

Brave Robin

There is a storm blowing our way
all the birds take flight and disappear
All except the brave little robin
he doesn’t show any care or fear

He sits all alone steadfast and still
watching the wild and windy weather
Sleet and rain is heading our way
he doesn’t seem to shake a feather

I should be more like a brave robin
but I don’t like the cold, wind and rain
So I’ll stay indoors ...

Platinum Jubilee

Today marks The Queens Platinum Jubilee
a day of royal celebration
Heartfelt and goodwill messages are sent
from every corner of the nation

During her seventy years of service
her sense of duty has always prevailed
Through the good, bad and most difficult times
her dignity and grace has never failed

It must be a time of mixed emotions
remembering those lost along the way
Yet...

Afterlife

Now that Afterlife is finished
don’t know what we will find to do
Friday nights will not be the same
we will have to find something new

The most difficult of subjects
shouldn’t be this entertaining
But the show is complete genius
so you won’t hear me complaining

We watched an episode a week
something we both looked forward to
It made us laugh and made us cry
we hoped the do...

Snow White Flu

There is not much to say
nothing much to do
Still testing positive
feeling sad and blue

For over a week now
the furthest I’ve been
Is to the bin and back
and the path between

I thought I had Covid
now I’m not so sure
I may have Snow White flu
there may be no cure

Named after the small folk
my symptoms are clear
I don’t need a Doc
to confirm my fear

I’m sneezy and slee...

First Snowdrops

On a dull February morning
I see a little ray of light
In a sheltered spot of my garden
they appear delicate and bright

Like a group of people in a crowd
collected they stand together
Fragile, dainty white parasols
braving the harsh winter weather

I often imagine they grow here
to protect fairies from the rain
An umbrella to shelter under
until they can take flight again

Something About Nothing and Last Day Of January

In a state of sheer panic
I’ve not written my poem for today
Nothing much to write about
and no words of any interest to say

So I write about nothing
because I feel the need to write something
It is nonsense and pointless
but anything is better than nothing… or is it?

Then I remembered I hadn't posted one from Monday!!

It is the last day of January
thirty one days have...

just for fun

Cold February Day

Define a crisp winter morning
this is my challenge for today
Describe what I see, hear and feel
on a cold February day

Take a deep breath of chilly air
inhale the sharpness of a knife
Awakening all your senses
your body alert and alive

To set the image in your mind
take a moment and close your eyes
Start at the top of the picture
imagine cloudless, bright blue skies

The la...
