Sounds Like Richard Burton

(This is not a really serious verse but here goes anyway . .)

I say ‘was’ instead of ‘were’

And I come from a council estate

Wish I had a voice like Richard Burton

But instead I talk like this

I spent years in a no hope comprehensive

And maybe lack of grammar shows me up

Maybe I should get myself a tutor

-Can’t be that expensive

So would my friends still recognise me

If my pronunciation improved?

Who does he think he is they’d say;

A BBC presenter for a day?

So; I’m a northern lad with a northern voice

And I’ll always talk this way

I'll no longer hide behind a curtain

(Though I wish I sounded  like Richard Burton.)

Accents are great whatever they are.It would be sad to become homogenised. XX

Be Northern and proud - Steve! Anyway, Richard Burton grew up in a poor Welsh mining village. And that voice was the result of 100 fags a day and a bottle (or three) of Scotch. High price to pay.

The Northern accent is perfect as it is. Like all things Northern, it comes from God :)

This is an interesting one Steve and something that's quite topical. How can you expect anyone from a particular locality to speak differently from their peers and why should they feel the need to?

And yet, there's now an instruction from the education department that teachers should be speaking and teaching the queen's English. It's going to be a hard one to enforce in the North of England - cos very many don't.

My nickname at my last job used to be 'terry Christian' you can imagine why, but I'll see if I can dig out a microphone and have a go!

Hi,Steve! It could be nice to hear your northern voice. Why didn't you record it?
