Hi there - I liked the muntjack poem, but the later one, I couldn't make any sense of it.
I didn't want to say so on the message board though in case it's just me being thick. XX

Almost. On Sunday night I was still 'in a lower bunk; couldn't orient myself at all: faces, poetry, sessions, conversations - the whole bit. I just THREW myself into the entire experience, and therefore needed time to reorient. Same with you?

Hi Anne, thanks for the comments. Yes the spire is amazing and possibly the most famous feature of Chesterfield. in that recent blog of mine it was refered to as the twisted spine...

Burrowing out of Sheffield
the steel pours south to a
bloodaxed chromium snail
with a twisted spine.

Hi Ann,
Was great to meet you at last, hope you had a good time, a safe journey back and so on. It was lovely of you to come all that way and I hope you found it worth while. I don't make it to that many WOL events myself, but I hope to see you at future events.
Keep in touch

Good afternoon Ann

Thank you so much for your comments you are very kind.

It seems to me that FREEDOM is a catalyst of circumstance, for example the cigarette crying for freedom is at once set ablaze and is extinguished humiliatingly into the stench of the ash tray who in turn cries out to be set free from its foul labour.

Of course not one of them realising that the cigarette smoker desires to cease his or hers odorous habit and be set free ….and so on.

Once again many thanks
Gus xx

I do not mislead, Ann - it is who I am - I have both nationalities, and spent many years in France.

Hello Ann. RE your comments about your work losing the element of fun as it gets better.
I suppose most of my humour could fall into the "wry" genre as I have always seemed to have been a good observer of life.
My problem with humorous poetry is that it all tends to sound too Pam Ayres or Roger McGough. Both of these are good poets in their own field but it is a very small field.
I suppose humour tinged with subtle irony, pathos, etc strikes a much stronger chord with me.
I still think you publish too early and need to sleep on the words. I can almost guarantee that you will review something. I always do.
Don't waste words either. I always think (unless a piece is sparsely pared) that every word should contribute something.
I try never to say eg. he looked, when there are a 101 ways to describe a look.
Anyway my tenpennyworth over. Graham.

Well, I feel London Journey really works as a poem in many ways: one is because there is, literally, movement in it. You go somewhere and come back again but in between a lot happens and is observed and remembered. The tone is conversational but that doesn't make it prose; for me, it just makes it more powerful. There is a strong rhythm in it which you may decide to or others may suggest you tweak in places. It's good that you're willing now to return to a poem and have another look at it once you've written it. If you love it enough I think a poem still needs nurturing, even after it's been cast out into the big world! PS No, I don't have problem with farts on trains, being an old fart who loves trains!

Back to Nineveh, Ann: you're removed the second "ghosts", but in doing so lost that sense of ghostly sheets in the rooms, which was good. Words like shrouded or spirited occur to me, instead of "deserted" rooms ... do you know what I mean?

Hi Ann
It is very kind of you to believe this one of my better poems... however I think there are others which are much better. Nonethe less it is so kind of you to say so

I thank you so very, very much for commenting but in particular reading. The subject matter whilst unpalatable to many has taken a different outcome and slant to that implied by many other poems of similar ilk.

The poem is a completely different in construction to my standard ‘typical’ and yes it is haunting but moreover it is a construction of woven memories and fleeting images, if I was only able to capture odours and taste and include them within this poem they to would have been included.
The description of the odour and taste would have been superfluous within this poem… a ‘you would have to have been there moment’.

Once again many thanks.

Augusta xx

Nosing towards America - joking apart, I dont think you or I or anyone else can help this - some poems just ARE working towards a punchline, but you have to hope to hold the reader's interest until the end - then WHAM!
Other poems, the crucial "feature" can be elsewhere & some are just lyrical all the way through with no punchline at all.
just my 2 cents xx

I think I'm feeling a little too Fragile for these silly comments - but I'll Relay them to someone who's a little Closer to the Edge.
Yes - a great band in their day but IMHO had done their best stuff by Fragile - CloseTTE had good parts but was defo getting a bit pompous by then. Call it Fate - call it Synchronicity, call it Cobblers - but Fragile is on my deck right now - one of my favouritest albums ever. Saw them twice at the Apollo.
In your case, did you ever like Focus as well then ? - still my all-time favourite band: I play one or the other or both almost every day - sad, isn't it - but for me, music never really got any better - although I do like all sorts of other stuff as well, these are at the top of tree. xx

Yes you could say that! I don't have any fondness for my married name - keep it to be the same as the kids - but I'm not the same person I was before. It is a strange dilemma for women. I've decided not to worry about it until another Isobel joins the site or someone wants to snap me up for publishing - I've a feeling the former may come sooner...

Thanks for reading and your comments on 'Bite the Bullet' - much appreciated. Yes - I was trying for an attraction/repulsion sort of duality - like the reverse of a magnet.
Looking at the two slightly different meanings and etymology of the phrase - the (misconceived but) common belief that it comes from the battlefield and used as a means to alleviate pain(ie pre-anaesthesia days but this is pretty much discredited), and the second, more modern meaning of suck it up/get on with it.
Anyway - as with all dualitys - I'm in two minds about it ... :)

Hi Ann. Visiting Connie is not simplistic, or indeed simple. You've smuggled important stuff about men and women and relationships in there. You may have written it quickly, although I don't expect you did; it certainly appears to be well-crafted. You shouldn't abandon your earlier style as you develop, is what I'm trying to say.

Hello Ann
Thanks for enquiring after me.
I am still plying my trade in this world but haven't posted for a bit as a result of technical reasons.
I had a computer crsah a while ago and lost the programme for doing audio files. My stuff doesn't sit well on the page so hence I haven't posted.
The thought occurs to me that you post audio stuff - what programme do you use? Perhaps I can get up and running again.
I do keep visiting the site and reading though.
Keep posting.
John
