Doesn't mean that they haven't both done some awesome stuff since... but you see what I mean? Besides, you might send off Coromandel & get zilch, but for ME it's world-class. That's the thing with poetry (and many other artforms) that it's such a personal thing. When I've sent stuff off it's nearly always the poem that I added in as an afterthought that gets published, never my "good stuff". All you can do is your best. xx B

PS - for what it's worth - in Coromandel you wrote one of my favourite poems of all time - up there with Robert Frost, Hugo Williams, John Burnside, Mervyn Peake, etc - pretty good company, I think you'd have to agree ?

HaHa - unfortunately, that's the way it goes... you post one of your best & it gets no attention ! Me & Isobel have discussed this phenomenon at length. For my part, I didn't see the prog - and, charming as the poem is, I think it would have far more meaning (for me anyway) if I had.
And I like polish bears but I feel no great affinity for them like you do (it's cats I love - every last man-jack of em).
Some of what I consider to be my very best stuff has not attracted even one single comment. Hmph ! (stamps feet)xx.

Re- instantaneous thinking and blogging, Ann. I can't do it, because I don't have the immediate imagination and the corresponding well of words that just seem to spill out of a fascinating mind, like yours. I have some, of course; I used to keep originals forever, to make sure I hadn't lost the 'first-flavour spice' in the finished piece, but not much now. You will never run out of ideas, never. Meeting you was one of the highlights of my year.

Hi - all I can do is not to try & force it - I basically never set-out to write anything. I get periods when I think I've said all I want to say.. and then I go & write 3 or 4 in a day. I keep them all in a file on my PC & rarely post straightaway, as I know I'll want to fiddle later. Re-reading afresh & I can ALWAYS see improvements and/or pare them down. I'll pick-up words or phrases in the paper, mags, TV or music that somehow seem unusual & maybe they'll just set-off a train of thought. My wife says things that crack me up cos she's foreign & her command of english is good, but not great. She says things like "my eyes were asleep, but I wasn't"... you know what she means but it sounds funny & sometimes that'll start things off. There's one well-known poet (cant remember his name now though) who writes some interesting words on scraps & just moves them around til something jumps out - I think it all depends on whether you want to write "solely" from the heart or if you'd like to do more wacky stuff as well? I can give you some ideas on how to if you want to ?... but it's not everyones cuppa though, but it often gives me a spark that sets things off :)

Hi again Ann, yes I love Cornwall, it's my favourite part of the country, yet we always seem to holiday abroad the last 15 years or so. Unfortuntely, we haven't visited my sister since she moved there, but hope to some time soon. Last time we met up at my other sister's, as she lives in Seaton. Longer ago we had holidays in Looe, Polperro and Carbis Bay.

Triolets are basically a bit easier than a Villanelle..wot I find fiendishly difficult...easier than a ghazal too if you can find a 'killer couplet' to start off with...after that they nearly write themselves, what with the repetition etc. I found this link very helpful. Have a go...if they are anything like your ghazals you will dazzle us!

As for criteria 4) Rhyme.

The Qafia DIRECTLY preceeds the Radif on the second line of each Sher and not at the end of the first line as in your ghazal, ghazal - Fibonacci swirl.

If you look at Agha Shahid Ali's book I think all but one of his ghazals show this.

Also Re Criteria 1)Title.

This presents us with a problem. How do we talk about and refer to each others work when they are all just called 'Ghazal'. Well, the standard method is to refer to Ghazal (Radif), so my example above would be my Ghazal (the day). And your last offering could be Ghazal (Fibonacci swirl)

I don't think my poetry is out of the ordinary in terms of poetry - I just know how to move people and sometimes it's just about sharing emotions. Ann, Re Ghazal (just before dawn) there are supposed to be 10 syllables in each line. But I have counted 'hour' as having two. Struggled to decide how many there were in hour, maybe normally one but in yorkshire two! Win

Ann, thanks for your kind words. I'm taking a break from WOL for at least a month, then I'll see. I overreacted re my poem but I think I was looking for the excuse. I use another poetry site and I'm gonna concentraye on that for a while. In contrast to WOL that site suffers from too few punters, though the standard of writing and criticism is higher, in general. There is just so much on WOL!There is more pressure on my time at the moment so summat has to give.Perhaps see you next year. Again, thanks.

Hi there Ann, yes we have about 4 inches of snow but as we live on a main road out to the M62 it is well gritted and clear. So is the motorway. Amazingly you can now look at the camera views of moroway junctions online, showing the state of the road 4 mins ago. Even so we decided not to go to manchester last night. Its heavy there too, and the side roads become difficult. Ow! all this chatter and no poetry-speak in it. I will get told off. Keep warm. We are in mid winter, moonwise, and the moon of Ice emerges from the sun's glow on Sunday afternoon so I don't think it will get warmer yet.
