Hi Jason! Am fascinated by 'The eagle has been caged'. Does it refer to a country which has the bird as a national symbol? Obviously the US is out, Albania, Serbia, Russia, Moldavia, Mexico has it on their flag? Obviously it would be a country which has been invaded and conquered. 'Wings forcibly furled, the freedom to which it was born, the killing of its young ' etc. If so might be Albania? Perhaps just lamenting the loss of freedom in general? Fantastic poem.

Thanks Jon, that is high praise indeed. And thanks D. Knape, I don't know about creative but it was a nickname from when I was a kid and one of the first poems I ever learned. ?

Hi Jason,
Saying that you shall endeavour to live up to the line ‘Poets see the beauty of the glass' is one of the highest compliments anyone has paid my work.
Thank you. It means a lot to me.

Hi Keith, no I'm not flaming, it was then and not now now. ?
Hi Jason, I think 'moving on' and scorch-marks says it .
Hi Ruth, I think the 'positive spin' echos Kieth's point, not wrong just behind my shoulder as I turn away.
Thank you all xxx

Hi Jason, thanks for the comment on We Were Beautiful. I absolutely agree; we may age but the beauty doesn't evaporate it just mutates. For me it was the beauty of the moment in time I was really looking back on - and that beauty can be frustratingly fleeting ?, Cheers Tom.

Hi Jason! Tx for the comment on Litholife -to be honest, (occasionally) the stone with two dates on it hadn't come into my mind at all. Being Scottish I admit to being superstitious, so perhaps that explains it!

Thanks Kevin, it's really appreciated. As you said, I like prose and verse, but also like writing in rhyme, it just seems to work better in my head, I need a rhythm you know? The jaberwock was one of the very first nicknames I ever had, partly because I could recite it at a very young age, and though no-one uses that name for me now, it's just always resonated for some reason. To be fair mate I always look for your posts too.

Hi Jason
I always look out for your postings because I like your rhymes and structures. Like yourself I enjoy reading prose, but prefer to write rhymes.
This is the first time that I have actually looked at your profile. I like your avatar with the Jabberwock/Dragon. and though I liked the picture I wondered why you chose it as your avatar. Glad that you explained that, it all makes sense now.
Cheers Kevin

I'm a fan of rhyme and tight structure myself, Jason. It's always a pleasure to read someone who takes as much time over, and has the same passion for, language as I do. This poem works for me.

If you mean the one where I quoted Michael Palin, he said it was one of his favourites, "the Limerick that doesn't work." It was always one of my favourites too.?

Hi Cynthia, I think you're thinking of Babyliss for the beauty products and Trevor Baylis for clockwork radios.
I honestly didn't know about the menorah until you asked, funny isn't it, I've loved this picture for years and yet never researched it. Not even sure who the artist is now.

I also thought the 'fork symbol' had a connection to the Jewish menorah. Ancient symbolism is an amazing 'study', and still so apt in our modern world. Like whether a) the circle embraces the square or b) the square embraces the circle. Huge concepts for human life, emphasising the 'why', not the 'what, when, where or who'.
I think I recognise 'Bayliss' as a famous 'brand' name, but I can't remember what product, or line of products. Body care maybe? I do have a vague idea that the products were both fine, and expensive. Am I way off course? I'm just curious, not nosey. Tell my beloved mother that! Who preached: 'Curiosity killed the cat!' And my flippant return: 'And satisfaction brought it back!' I'm surprised I didn't get smacks. But she just chuckled. Time and time again.

To be perfectly honest Cynthia I didn't know, so I found out and it seems to be some sort of stylised Menorah or seven branched lamp stand ?.
I don't know the significance of it in this picture, if any. All I could find out was:
stands for light, wisdom, and Divine inspiration. In this period of darkness, we welcome the approaching Festival of Lights and the timeless lessons of the Holy Menorah.

Interesting bio, Jason. Why would anyone look askance at someone else writing in rhyme! It boggles the mind.
I also choose my words very carefully, and I highly value my dictionary and thesaurus, often searching for the exact 'word', the nuance I want to 'cultivate'. IMO, poetry is deliberate.
I look forward to reading more of your work.
I do wonder how sarcasm is ever 'loving'.
What does the symbol imply? The jagged teeth one, like a fork?

I wish I could take credit for saying that, but I've brought that bit of wisdom along with me through the last couple of decades after hearing it from a college English instructor. She may not have been a favorite of most of the students, but she was no-nonsense with quite a lot to offer if you were willing to take some criticism.
Thanks for looking in,
Rachel

Hi Jason
Thanks for your words.
I'm a little like you, in that I hear a lot of what I want to write in rhyme.
I started writing nearly 12 years ago, at the tender age of 60.
My first wife had died and I found it helped putting stuff down on paper, but I was put down a wee bit (by those more experienced) because my poems rhymed.
Whatever my writing is, I was saved (in a writing sense) by reading Langston Hughes's poems. I could actually understand them!
I persevered, and it was poetry that brought about marriage number 2. Much to be thankful for.
