To Leave The Cage
As Covid rules start to be lifted,
Lives once more shall soon be shifted.
In parks and gardens we are now free
To be with people we have longed to see.
While we may meet in groups of up to six,
We are also now allowed to mix
With two households, though of any size.
For our patience this is the latest prize.
As well as this we can now play all sports,
Perhaps on the field in the courts...

The State of World
All people now seem to crave success,
Though this road may be one of stress.
And so many try to be perfect,
Knowing success brings respect.
We all appear to be in competition
To get more money and more recognition.
So why do some have an endless need
To fulfil a constant greed?
So away with envy and with hate,
For we now have bigger things upon our plate.
The world now ne...

A New Breath
He flung the rope
over a branch of a tree
And fluttering down
came a few dead leaves
He watched them rest
upon the cold, crisp earth
And cursed his mother
For his wasted birth
This year of pandemic
Had him stripped to the bone
Made him jobless & useless
A bear in his home
Frustration begat anger
And anger begat fear
Unable to provide
For...

Covid-ity
During the lockdown, I didn't do much writing and wasn't inspired like some to write about Covid or the lockdown in general, as I figured there would be enough people doing this already. The poem below is a new and first draft. It is meant to be messed up like the whole crisis and covers things I have heard said from a whole host of people and media. Comments please and anything I could add to ...

Our Covid
All Great Britain has now seen
How dreadful is Covid-19.
While it is hard to make predictions,
We hate all these dismal restrictions.
Has Nottingham reason to be in fear
Now it is placed upon the second tier?
For its people what shall this mean,
As we envisage this depressing scene?
While our politicians fight their wars,
Recall us being long cooped up indoors.
So many people do not ...

Unknown eyes watching
Religious tolerance found wanting
Fear

Double standards
Stops the spread
Of disease and death

Pandora's Box
Pandora’s Box
barbeques and beaches
your own little playground
complaining about others
who sit in your space
incandescent
that schools are reopening
while little Johnny plays
with his mates in the park
lighting a fire
to cremate your pork chops
on the grass and heathlands
where sparks are bullets
leaving B&Q
with a six foot mirror

FIVE O'CLOCK
At five o’clock the Tories dribble poison in my ears
trying hard to hide their perma-smirks they giggle at our fears.
Trumpeting as triumphs, all the targets they’ve not met.
They twist the truth like wicker man and hope we’ll all forget
that they failed to act in time to protect our brave frontline
And they watched the death toll climb, while they told us we were fine

Experts
Experts
Just inject it
Or swallow it if you like
I think that will be OK
Maybe shine a light
Or if you can
Get the light inside you
That will work, right?
Or pray
Praying’s good
Pray big
That should work
I’m an expert
I’m a big expert
There’s no bigger expert
Than me
He said it
I don’t believe it
He actually said it
What’s all this a...

The Lodger
The Lodger
We let him in
And he stayed
He had been pleading
Out there
Wanting somewhere to stay
At first we thought he was just like all the others
Some fly-by-night who would be here then gone
But no
He wanted to hang around
He was everywhere
Into everything
He made us change our daily routine
He was probably in the kitchen (and we w...

Thirteen Minutes From Home
Thirteen Minutes From Home
I was thirteen minutes from home
On a warm April day
Bumping my way through a crowd
The future a lifetime away
There were cars revving their engines
As they crawled along the street
kids were playing in gardens
And getting under everyone’s feet
Just for a second I paused
As I turned into Pandemic Close
As the noise fell away lik...

Plague Mantra
Plague Mantra
We know that going out is wrong
and socialising would be worse,
so stay at home where we belong.
We know that going out is wrong,
avoid, like plague, the milling throng
to help the doctor and the nurse.
We know that going out is wrong
and socialising would be worse.

Antigen
Antigen
He knocked at the door
Shouting ‘let me in!’
Tempting us to go out
With his whisky and gin
He hid around corners
Under tables and chairs
Trying his best
To catch us unawares
He was sitting on benches
Where others had sat
He was on garden fences
Where we’d stop for a chat
He was hanging around
Tesco trolly parks
He was all over door han...

All We Left Were Birds
All We Left Were Birds
I heard the birdsong through the air
From far away and long ago
The sound of sparrow and of crow
And knew no human travelled there
They sat aloft without a care
No threat from humans down below
I heard the birdsong through the air
From far away and long ago
As time flew I became aware
Of how the seasons ebb and flow
When there ...

Grave
Grave
I am the scythe that cuts through old and young
In cornfields where the idle crows watch on
As scarecrows flap their arms in summer sun
And wonder where the greedy birds have gone
The weeds grow now where once the sharp blade fell
Stealing from us all that we once held dear
There are no devils in this weeping hell
Only children transformed through pain and fear
