House Shoes

When weather cools
we don house shoes
keeps old feet warm
gives toes more heat,
But woe is he
who shuffles feet
and woe to he who
interrupts wife's sleep!

The Accident

He fell off a ladder
his clothes torn and tattered
and oh what a mess
made his wife even madder
though he never recovered
it did not really matter
just one of those things
now the former is latter!

Talented & Gifted

When I was in school
there was no program for
the talented & gifted
the only gift giving I knew of
was at Christmas
nevertheless even if there had been
a program for talented & gifted
I would not have qualified
because I was neither talented nor gifted
but basically just average
I only developed a talent late in life
for this poetry thing
which some would...

Doing

I am still doing
the same old things
I used to be doing
although there are days
when I don't know
what I'm doing
some days are better than others
for actually doing
but doing takes work
which I don't like doing
so I just think about doing
which is better than actually doing
then there are times
when my wife tells me what to do
and ...

For Once

There will be no poem today
there will be nothing sent,
all things being considered
best decision I've made since
we have differences of opinion
yet in my own defense,
sensitivities are acknowledged
for once used my good sense.

Shopping Cart

The shopping cart
is a true friend
always there to help
it goes wherever you go
takes the load off
gives full support
a hand up if you will
carries what you cannot
always there by your side
sometimes creaky but always reliable
handling whatever you throw at it
with steel resolve
without complaint
that's how it rolls.

Nothing Today

There will be
no poem today
I want to have
a day away,
Know you are pleased
relieved to say
for more days like this
I hear you pray.

Speechless

There is a Parrot next door
it lives in a cage outside on the patio
the lady who lives next door
takes care of it like a mother
she feeds it
pets it
and in the morning
talks to it from her window
cooing like a dove
talking baby talk to the parrot
but the Parrot has no time for foolishness
Food is all it's interested in
the lady's sweetness is wasted on the ...

Boiling Water

She was so young
she had never cooked before
never even knew how to boil water
her mother did all the cooking
so it was a monumental task
her learning to cook
It took on the scale of climbing mount Everest
she was an amateur but willing to try
starting slow but growing more confident
as time went along
small steps at first then branching out
experimenting
t...

Lizard

A lizard
make its home inside

when there's a yard
a fence to climb

under our bed
it likes to hide

it's comfortable there
about like I'm.

Punctuation

I am writing this
to use up my excess punctuation marks.
there's a period right there.
that's two.
oops 3.
now I have to work in a comma,
as I take a brief pause, so to speak.
that done, should I go on?
(question mark)
This is so much fun!
Bam!
(exclamation point)
that's good enough for now
now I revert back
to the ever reliable period.
The End.

Limbo

The computer dies
sending us to Limbo
between light and darkness
heaven and hell

our sin
seeking knowledge
trying to mimic God
creating our own universe

so we wait in Limbo
atonement for our transgression
to prove our worthiness
to the computer god

bannished
and humiliated
we pray the tech arrives
and grants us repair and absolution

Woke

He takes a lot of naps
At his age that's what people do
They doze off
in the middle of a conversation
or even while driving
He says he is more comfortable
being asleep than awake
If he's awake he has to face reality
He is definitely not Woke!
He is mostly asleep!

Friend Me

I don't do Facebook
so I do not have total strangers
asking me to be my friend
how can you be a friend
to someone you've never met?
a friend should be selective
a friend should not be random
have some dignity
have some sense
besides that
I don't care about your selfies
or your self-promotion
or your vacation photos
although
after seeing Facebook
I ...

First Sign

The first sign of Fall
a touch of coolness
a crispness in the air

like a mother's soothing hand
across one's face
bringing kindness and relief

making the heat of summer
slink away
Fall rolls in overnight

and surprises
when you open the door
and feel its first embrace.

Hide-Out

Boys in the neighborhood
always had a place
where they could go to
to just be boys
a place in the vacant lot
or down by the creek
where they could build
a shelter
of limbs and branches and duct tape
a hide out
from parents
from neighbors
keep out
for Boys only
a hidden place
for Pirates and Indians and Outlaws
for plots ...

Smart Wife

I have to admit it
my wife is smarter than I am
though it pains me to say it

it took me many years
to acknowledge the fact
despite the fact that it was obvious
to all others

for whatever reason
she married down
I must have had some attraction for her
but I don't know what it was

perhaps it was the fact that I could dance
perhaps it was becaus...

X Marks The Spot (just for fun)

Sometimes you spot a spot
on shirt or table top
either wet or dry or not
a blot is what you got

Can't make it go away
although you scrub a lot
the spot is permanent
like the stain in the crock pot

But to mark the spot
just take a Marks-a-Lot
and circle round the spot
so the spot won't be forgot

The spot is what you got
whethe...

The Poem That Stays With You

A poem that stays
from childhood
in grade school
as was taught

With succeeding years
remembered
and never
quite forgot

So fastened
in ones memory
with the learning
it well brought

The poem
fondly remembered
the author
soon forgot.

Little Flower

A little flower
opens wide
and pokes its head
up to the sky

Its act describes
how nature shines
a miracle
can't be denied

Each day we must
in hope abide
toward the light
we too must strive

No question how
the rule applies
we all will blossom
if we try.

Lost It

I ain't against it
just ain't much for it
I used to be with it
now I just skip it
used to be behind it
now I'm undecided
I'd like to re-find it
but at my age
I lost it.

Armadillo

Crossing the road
it gives men pause

so strange
it causes oohs and aahs

it lumbers along
just what it does

an armored tank
with tiny paws

now just a spot
on the road because

it was not as fast
as it thought it was.

Snail Trails

When snails go
they go real slow
and where they go
is marked with slime,
it's how they roll
they're so inclined
there is no rush
they have the time.

Mandate

Poetry is now Mandated
you will read poems written by me
or else
you will lose your job
your wife and family
your good reputation
you will be banned from restaurants
schools and churches
you will be harassed and ridiculed
and driven from society
unless of course
you are a poet yourself
in which case
the mandate does not apply
because you are elit...

Old Goat

Old goat rocks boat
some say he's mean
butts heads with those
he disagrees
won't stay penned up
contrarily
the damned old goat
sounds a lot like me

Old goat revolts
goes against the grain
from stubbornness
he won't refrain
he steps on toes
continuously
the damned old goat
sounds a lot like me.

THEM

In case of shame
we pass the blame
the other guy did it
we contend

If results are good
we stake our claim,
but if they're bad
we're blaming them

We make things up
to credit our name
but if found out
it's them we blame

It was our idea
we like to pretend
but if screwed up
then it's on THEM.

LIFE

Life is a struggle
the weed that keeps coming back
the dog tied to a chain
the rabbit eaten by the wolf
the soldier flung into the wall of fire
life is a struggle
but struggle it does
because death is the alternative
we resist with all our being
so on goes life
an unstoppable force
ever struggling for another day
another moment
one last breath.

Simple Man

I am a simple man
simple to understand

Simplicity comes naturally
of it I am a fan

My poems are always simple
on that principle I stand

This poem therefore is simple
as simple as I am.

October

October makes her entrance
seemed like she never would

She played so coy we wondered
not sure of where we stood

Still we waited, ever patient
for our anticipated date

On first sight we fell in love
her kiss well worth the wait.
