EVIL
What lies beneath or in between
sees little light until it seems
the black of night brings out its teeth
then evil comes from underneath
What is it in the minds of men
that brings out evil, mean and grim
is it in man's nature, hidden deep
that cruelty so often repeats
Where in the heart does evil lie
its commonness can't be denied
in darkest moods it is...

In Memory Of
It ain't my fault
I'm not engaged
it's basically caused
by my old age
What's happened to me
is a shame
still I have no one
else to blame
Seems like I'm going
through a phase
forget where I am
and whence I came
Yet I exclaim
the Lord be praised
I can still remember
my own name!

MAPS
We don't have city maps anymore
Siri and Alexa have taken over
and now do all the work for us
but remember when we Did have maps
and once you unfolded one
you could never fold it back again
despite your best efforts
it just would not go back to its original form
you had to finally crush it together
as best you could
cram it in the glove box
slam the hatch
a...

New Car
Oh the joy
of a new car
as flashy as
a shooting star
the smell of it
newly acquired
much better than
one we had prior
puff out our chest
imagination fired
give it the gas
highway required
turn on tune in
hums like a choir
peek into garage
just to admire.

Where Flowers Bloom
Who would expect
a flower to bloom
on cold concrete
with so little room
no soil, no place
to make a home
still like a weed
it roots and grows
Somehow a seed
got stuck between
the concrete where
it makes a seam
there on hard rock
it grew to be
a miracle
to be believed
We must make note
of this lone plant
that would not relent
o...

Canaries Flights Suspended
Hundreds of Canaries
have been grounded by
extreme sand storms in the Atlantic.
the Canaries cannot fly
in wind speeds over 50 MPH
so most of the Canaries are
just sitting on the Tarmac
looking yellow and perplexed
It may be days before
they are given permission
to take off
In the meantime
talk about a mess on the runway
this is what they mean by
the...

Like Spam
Your spam folder is empty
the notice says
it is feeling unwanted
and even jealous
of your brimming In-box
which is always crammed full
of stuff that is
inviting and exciting
but here sits your poor Spam box
all by itself
empty
and pouting
like an cranky child
it's bad enough that it has
that lousy name "Spam"
but how would you like to be ...

The Unexpected
Sometimes beautiful shells
wash up on the shore
things we never sought
but are pleased to find
sometimes things
float in unexpectedly
in our daily lives
a kind word
or unforeseen compliment
can then mean more than
all our other treasures
take these words to heart
take them home to keep.

Dinosaur Extinction ( For Mature Audiences)
Can you imagine
the noise and the fumbling
of two dinosaurs out for a date,
the earth would be rumbling
both of them nervous and bumbling
as the two of them tried hard to mate
The two so inspired
would be hot as a fire
for each other they couldn't wait,
It would make quite a showing
their wide nostrils blowing
but their conjoining a roaring mistake

Bodies
To be somebody
you must have a body
some people like to brag about
their bodies
others complain about their body
some people are body shamed
others flaunt their bodies
ghosts have no bodies
but scare everybody
then there's the body politic
which is a real ugly body
a few people know
where the bodies are buried
undertakers love bodies
if you get sick

Cedar Trees
The Cedar tree grows full and green
in winter the only color to be seen
yet there are those opposed to these
blamed for their rash of allergies
They fault the tree and its small seeds
and for the pollen said released
yet its only doing what any tree
does to survive, quite naturally
But oh the teary eyes one sees
the cough, the wheeze, the sudden sneeze
...

Oh Thoreau
The world is filling up
cities run together
farms disappear
cars run bumper to bumper on the interstate
8 lanes across and still crowded
try to get away
ride out in the country
but the country is all built-up
all is pavement
trees get cut down
more roads and more congestion
subdivisions pop up like mushrooms
there used to be a thing called distance
there...

Cow Sheds
You see them along the highway
old tumbled down cow sheds
still left from when there were farms
and hard working farmers
the decaying sheds reminding us
of what used to be
sheds now turned gray as moss
caved in with
rusted roofs and rusted wire
still holding on
but leaning like drunks
old gates hanging open
cedar posts weathered
almost petrified
so ma...

Two Day Poem
I will be gone
for the length of two days
so suffer the loss
in your dejected ways
You'll miss the postings
for which I am to blame
and your miserable lives
just won't be the same
There will be mourning
in so many ways
the gnashing of teeth
the flailing in pain
But do not surrender
as I have explained
in the meantime you can listen

Wash Cycle
The slosh of the washing machine
reminds me of waves lapping at the shore
makes me want to take off my shoes
and wade barefoot
toes tickled by the warm water
the gentle sound of waves
tossed by the Tide
forever slapping the shore
that steady beat
that gentle drone
puts me to sleep
awakened only by
the washers beep signal
telling me the cycle is done
t...

Puttin' On The Socks
The old man ain't limber anymore
his legs are weak, his back is sore
but the one thing about it all that sucks
is his inability to put on his socks
his legs are stiff, they will not bend
can't get his toes to enter in
the socks elude his feet and then
he comes to a disastrous end
his body racked in pain, contorts
as from the chair he soon aborts
a ...

The Short Life Of A Pill Bug
I roll up
into a ball
and kids have fun
playing with me
they like to poke me
with a stick
to see what I will do
some will throw me
some will place barriers
in front of me
some play army men with me
I get rolled down hills
and buried in dirt
even used to make faces
on mud pies
no matter what
I keep going
over or under any obstacle
until...

CAVES
Doors to the underground
homes of ancient ancestors
man and beast
entrances to mother earth
inviting yet foreboding
caves draw us in
to explore
to challenge our senses
we enter with anticipation
drawn in by curiosity
a sense of wonder
a taste of dread
deeper deeper
feeling along limestone walls
hearing echos
the slow drip of water
shadows

Fleeting Thoughts
I try to make my thoughts complete
but often I go wrong
most of my thoughts are incomplete
not kept for very long
Oh how I strain to keep my thoughts
but my efforts are for naught
since every thought I get to keep
there's a hundred more forgot
I came across this random thought
the only one that I could find
it stayed around to remind me of
how scatte...

Lemonade
Make Lemonade
out of lemons
is what they suggest
why make a frown
when a smile
will contrast
take fear of failure
turn it into success
a smile is a miracle
one we all possess
What heights
can be conquered
if only we press
even lemons are tasty
if with sugar blessed
and any situation
can be positively addressed
it's our observation
a s...

High Blood Pressure
The tests came back
the diagnosis was confirmed
my wife has high blood pressure
and I am the cause
it's all the things I do
that irritate her
I try to behave
but it's just not natural
she would lead a normal life
if it wasn't for me
for some reason when I'm around
her blood pressure spikes
the doctor says the best remedy
is for me to leave and not come back
for a minimum o...

Second Childhoods
As we enter
our second childhood
we become like kids again
finally free to do what we want
with fewer obligations
and far less responsibility
we don't have to report to work
we don't have to make decisions
and we don't have to apologize
we can be as free as children
and enjoy simple things
like ice cream and doughnuts
bare feet
the smell of roses
like...

Dead Roach
What people dread most
is the sight of a roach
turn on the light
and more will encroach
Grab can of Raid
one shot is supposed
to knock them out flat
at least that's what we hope
Roach wiggles its legs
may need one more dose
now get out the soap
erase memory of roach!

Sorting Socks
I take care
to sort my assorted socks
into my two sock drawers
one drawer is for black socks
one for white
I am neat
I am organized
I am sorta particular
about my socks
which are always sorted
and folded in fine fashion
my sock drawer routine
is sort of annoying
to some people who resort to
casting aspersions
and who get out of sorts
at my odd b...

Names
We try to remember names
we struggle to pronounce some names
we come up with names for our children
some women have hyphenated names
we name the date
we name our pets
we name places In Memory Of
sometimes we use
the name of God in vain
then we sometimes call each other names
which is worst use of all for a name
call me by name but please
do not call me name...

Accomplishments
It was the essence
of his life
as far as we can tell
He did nothing
in particular
but he did it very well
His accomplishments
few and far between
yet his life unparalleled
He did nothing
in particular
still he did it very well.
