Heh heh - I don't disagree with you either - so we are not in disagreement. Does that mean we are in agreement though? You are the negotiator - I'll let you decide :)

Re our dishonest leaders, financial controllers and the 'establishment', I don't imagine that things are any different now to how they have always been - it's just that we get to find out more via the media... That isn't to excuse what has gone on though. I guess I just find the scenes of social unrest more psychologically disturbing. Even though it may have cost the country less, anarchy just scares me - a future filled with such incidents is not a rosy one. I suppose the density of population in this country doesn't help - there are just too many pressure points. The riots just prove that society is fragile and that the system only works if man allows it to. That probably sounds like a lot of shite. It's late - I think too hard and I'm waffling - but I know you'll forgive me. xx

I don't honestly believe that any of those youths mused over what bankers and dishonest politicians and got up to, before they went on the rampage - but that's just my opinion of course. As for the man who got accidentally shot by police... remind me not to pack an illegal firearm next time I go shopping or run away from a copper - it must increase the risks exponentially.

Thanks for your comments on "No Better Ending". Glad you liked it. There is something wonderfully evocative about wood-smoke.
As for the gripped us = eucalyptus rhyme: the eucalyptus was genuine (I really was burning it); it was the "gripped us" rhyme which needed a bit of knocking in!

The doctor says, "Wow. That's ugly. How did it start?"
And the frog says "It all started with a boil on my bum."

Aww thanks for worrying about me. I'm fine - still sane, despite mixing with so many poets...

The tone of my last one was a bit sad and wistful - mementos bring that out - the thought that everything in life is so impermanent and the only things that endure are our memories.

Untitled was about world/people weariness - inspired by someone else but applicable to myself at times also.

You are right - I wouldn't have said 'why, no' - it sounded more poetic than 'no' though - the line needed one more syllable. The way we say things isn't always that pretty and I don't think it hurts to bend things a little in poetry.
I can't see myself on the South Bank Show any time soon - but yes, I am slowly growing in confidence - that's what it's all about really, isn't it? If I could gift anything to my kids, it would be confidence. I should write a poem about that...

I like the chair picture. It tells me that you don't take life/yourself too seriously. I would like to have seen a picture of you climbing up there also - that would have been funny! xx

Funnily enough I read it today but was too short on time to comment. I was going to come back and say that it obviously wasn't autobiographical. Anyone with a decent knowledge of Barbara Cartland (as the teenage moi was) would know that her books would never have entertained the union of a male farm-hand with a monied female. Far more likely for an ordinary girl to find a french/italian count or some english nobleman and be swept off her feet - into a four poster bed - not a hay stack.

I enjoyed the poem - though I needed to revisit to comment on style. I did wonder whether such a woman really existed. She seemed too happy and contented in her little bubble - not lonely at all. xx

You must know my views on catharsis by now Anthony…
I do write the occasional autobiographically inspired piece – though my pride would stop me from going to the outer limits. I think women are more inclined to give vent to their emotions in this way and I don’t see it as a bad thing. Catharsis only gets a bad name when the needle gets stuck and we fail to look beyond ourselves. Our own blood and tears are but a drop in the ocean when you take a look around.

Thanks for paying me a visit Anthony - what doesn't kill us certainly makes us stronger :) Am working hard on doing more performance/funny stuff - though I fear my latest may be too blue to post on WOL. Co-incidentally, it also bigs up Wigan - the best place to perform in the whole North West, from my experience. We don't take ourselves 'too' seriously up here, which makes for an entertaining evening. You will have to revisit your roots one day. xx

Thanks very much for your comment on the Betjeman poem, Anthony. Very heartening. I don't pretend to be an expert on him, so I had to check out the one you mentioned. Admired the whimsical rhapsodising about places like Kenton and Perivale. The glorification or transformation of the ordinary. Marvellous rhythm, as you say.

For sure we should learn from it - I think I managed to help my own daughter through her difficult years by remembering how rapidly my own moods changed at that time. Hormones definitely play a part. My lass went from being a kind, generous, honest caring child to a lunatic overnight - one who stole, lied constantly, wouldn't wash etc. We got through it much faster than others I know, and by 16 she was sane again :D I really do believe that that period is one of actual madness. Wouldn't go back if you paid me!

Hi there Anthony, long time no speak! Thanks for the comment on Uncle Ned. I enjoyed the links you sent me... thanks. I have an old vinal record of The Fivepenny Piece, a couple of The Oldham Tinkers. We used to sing quite a few of their songs in the bad old days so Im familiar with all their work.
I agree with you that our old dialect songs and poems should be treasured. I was doing some research a while back into the origins of our Lancashire dialect, and its quite fascinating. Most of our Lancashire dialect words come directly from the old Anglo Saxon, with a big input from old Viking.
Such a rich heritage should be preserved as much as possible and in as many ways as possible.
