New Year Rhyme
How New-Year rhymes we've heard before
put us to sleep, because they bore
As New Years come, more aged we grow
then just like the rubbish, out we go
We come in crying at our birth
then exit smiling, rear of hearse
We hug the world and all its poor
we'd sooner hug the girl next door
We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
then get divorced or end up ...

Welcome To Poetry
Our site allows
free readings of assorted poems
if you have the wherewithal
to withstand them
This may sound kind of crazy
however I got to use the word
Wherewithal
which along with Catawampus
are two of my favorites
It's a two for one special
and an opportunity for me
to use the word wherewithal
and for you to read
this slightly catawampu...

Seeds
What marvels are tiny seeds
holding life itself inside each pod
so small and insignificant
so dull and drab
yet from seeds
springs the miracle of life
our very existence
depends on seeds
seeds sprout corn and rice
and plants of every imaginable kind
seeds provide us work and wealth
seeds paint us green
our earth wreathed in lushness
blessed wit...

Poets In Our Midst
Like Gorillas in the mist
we have poets in our midst-
we think they don't exist
til extinct, then sorely missed.

The Feeder
The doves come first
pecking carefully at the seed
they mine the ground
to find the golden seeds
so happy with their discovery
Next come the smaller birds
the sparrows the finches
who take the smallest seeds
and are satisfied with
whatever they can find
Later come the haughty Grackles
black overlords
who parade like peacocks
as if they owned the yar...

The Meaning Of Christmas
Buried underneath
all the bags
& bows
& paper
is the true meaning
of Christmas
somehow lost
in the fury of the day
the mad rush
the pursuit of trivial things
what lies beneath
is the companionship
the caring
the love exchanged
for this be thankful
for this be glad
without this exchange
of giving love
a sadder world woul...

Poetry Contest
The new Poetry Competition is now open.
You only have a few short days to live, so get a move on and enter.
Do not submit sub-par poems written on napkins.
We expect poems to be brief and to actually have a point.
Long poems are boring and harder for us to understand.
Make sure you follow the guidelines. No sex and no profanity.
We retain the right to censor your thoughts and who...

Opening Gifts
Open that one
it's for you
the grand kids
tear at the paper
bows fly across the room
paper piles everywhere
read the tag
act surprised
just what you wanted
hope it fits
you knew all along
what it would be
you can always count
on Santa.

Winter Winds
Oh how the wind in sky of bitter cold
curls round the corners of our very souls
its chill makes trembling in our bones
we shiver in our boots from head to toe
For in the path of winter wind is borne
the frigid ice of country to the north
which rattles trees, shakes loose their leaves
whisks warmth away down deserted streets
Now listen to the wind, its ghostly...

Boys & Books
Give a boy a book
and he'll be hooked
for life
his whole world
shifts dramatically
suddenly there are words
that he can relate to
books enter his life
to become best friends
every book an adventure
one page leads to the next
curiosity flourishes
one book just the start
of a romance with words
knowledge becomes the gift
laid before his very eye...

Plastic Cup
Here I am
on the side of the road
tossed from a window
with straw and lid
I am the plastic cup
that you got from the hamburger place
that held the drink
which you did not even finish
now I sit here in the weeds
among the other convenience trash
the plastic straws
the plastic bags
the aluminum cans
all of us together
waiting for the years to roll by

The HOA
I told my wife
I'm going down to the mail box
if I'm not back in 20 minutes
call an Ambulance
she replied
if you fall and can't get up
make sure you fall
on the sidewalk
and not the street
you know how the HOA
feels about littering.

Black Birds
Black birds on a line
like polished pearls
strung along a high wire
their feathers gleam
boast brilliance in the sun
suddenly there is a signal
and all at once they rise in air
to form a cloud of blackness
a dance of feathered wings
a mass of moving parts
all mutually agreed
to reach some chosen place
a place where all regather
as one coherent flock
o...

Muddy Water
The river
muddy from recent rain
turns black from winter sludge
the fishermen who used to fish here
do not come anymore
the bank is too slippery
the water too black
the game is up
fish will not bite
what they cannot see
the river keeps flowing
the fish are free.

When mail was real
instead of junk
we used to wait anxiously
for the mail to come
we'd be excited to see
the postman coming in his little white truck
then wait
then run
to the mailbox to find the mail
like a treasure hunt
the mail was from
family relatives from faraway places
who sent us news
of what was going on
in their corner of the world
it was...

Amazon.Com
My wife ordered a cat
from Amazon
the cat came two days later
the box it came in was okay
but the cat itself was damaged
she called the company
and asked about the return policy
customer service told her
she was out of luck
the cat was fully functional
when they shipped it
therefore the cat
could not be returned
besides they said
who would want
a u...

What Ifs And Maybes
What ifs and maybes
get lots of abuse
if we don't commit
there is nothing to lose
and maybe just maybe
we can't even choose
what ifs and maybes
are just an excuse.

I Think
I think I like
to think
I think thinking
can be smart
if you don't overthink
I think sometimes
we think alike
when I think
too hard it hurts
I'm thinking now
I think
let me know
what you think.
Thursday 13th December 2018 12:53 pm
Wish I Were
I wish I were
as smart as you
then oh what dreams
I could pursue
but sadly I'm still me
in lieu
so what's the point
of being you.

No There There
They say There
is so very rare
there really is
no there there
Yet there must be
a There somewhere
else there would be
no point in There
For there therefore
we must repair
if no there there
then There is where?
So there you are
just to be fair
the point is There's
neither here nor there.

Old Dogs
Them ole dogs
are just like us
they're old and lame
and sleep too much
Some even go
accusing us
of being slow
and out of touch
We don't care
what people say
we can still chase
stray cats away
While us old dogs
have common plight
our bark still works
just not our bite.

33 Degrees
It's 33 degrees outside
yet a man I spot
wears shorts & flip flops
talk about a contradiction
he must have been at the beach
when winter broke out
then it dawned on him
something was not quite right
perhaps he will go home now
and get a jacket
and some common sense
we've seen it all
we've been to Walmart.

Monthly Bill
Your monthly bill
is ready for your review
after you recover
rehabilitation therapy is available for
our long-time customers
who have a prompt payment history

as we can only do so much
we struggle to get by on the paltry payments
sent in by customers like you
we blame inflation
we blame increased co...

Where Wild Things Go
Out in the woods
where wild things go
you will find places
where animals
have worn down a path
just a faint bending of the grass
a branch bent back
impressions on the ground
where something has gone through
enough times the same way
that it made a trail
the woods are full of little roads like this
left by creatures of the night
who prowl the landscape

Little Boy's Pockets
Pull out a little boy's pocket
and all manner of things fall out
all the treasures he found
on his daily rounds at school
in the parking lot
in the back yard
he finds things the little things
that spark his interest
these are important to him
rocks & sticks
a button
a ring tab
an acorn
a Rolly Poly bug
a penny
a Lego piece
a bottle cap
a stub of a pencil
the list could...

Eating Healthy
Eat healthy
they say
over and over
don't bring home the bacon
bring home the fruit and vegetables
so I tried to follow
I attempted wellness
the only problem was
that every time I tried to buy lettuce
they recalled it
Salmonella
was everywhere
poison sprays too
produce from Mexico
produced more poison fruit
like Adam
I was in a quandary
so rat...

Tree
God makes a tree
and then lets me
Sit underneath
its canopy
Why build a church
when God is free
Sing praise to He
who makes a tree.

The Longer You Live
The longer you live
the nicer people are
they seem to show
a little more respect to you
once your hair turns gray
those who used to
brush by you in a rush
now open the door for you
and help you in small ways
showing courtesy and consideration
to those senior citizens
who have slowed down or
cannot understand directions
it's a marvelous revelation

Normal People
An old man
tries to be helpful
he is fumbling to fill cups
for his grandchildren
at the water fountain in the park
the problem is
he cannot turn on the water
and fill the cups at the same time
he needs another hand
then all of a sudden
a teenage boy shows up
who quietly volunteers to help
the boy is polite
he is kind and courteous
he restores the old ...
